Exercise 1. Translate the following word combinations from English into Russian

Power plant, fuel consumption, horse power, direct injection, air conditioner, air cleaner, automatic transmission fluid, power output, crankshaft position, instrument panel, electric control unit, exhaust gas recirculation, electronic control transmission, front-wheel drive, idle air control, mixture control, mixture control radiator, fan motor.

Exercise 2. Переведите следующие предложения, обратите внимание на перевод “цепочек существительных”.

1. Gasoline internal-combustion engines power most automobiles, but some ones use diesel fuel, electricity, natural gas or solar energy. 2. Fuel-injection systems or, in older cars, a carburetor deliver fuel vapour from the gas tank to the engine cylinders. 3. An electric current flows through a spark plug to ignite the vapour. 4. The blocks in most internal-combustion engines are straight line designs or V designs. 5. Straight line configurations of six or eight cylinders require long engine compartments found more often in trucks than in cars.

Exercise 3. Преобразуйте предложения, заменив активный залог страдательным.

1. The rotating crankshaft causes pistons to move. 2. The pistons compress the vapour inside the cylinders. 3. The fuel mixture combusts and creates hot gases. 4. Hot gases push the pistons down the cylinders and cause the crankshaft to rotate.

Exercise 4 *. Переведите с русского на английский язык.

1. Эта 2-местная спортивная машина была выпущена фирмой БМВ в 1936 году, когда фирма уже имела высокий авторитет на скоростных трассах Европы. 2. Прототипы БМВ-328 испытали в гонке на Большой приз Франции на треке в Монлери (Montlhery). 3. Серийная модель поступила в продажу год спустя. 4.Она оснащалась 6-цилиндровым 2-литровым двигателем, который устанавливался на седане БМВ-326. 5. Мощность мотора повысили с 50 до 80 л.с. 6. Это стало возможным благодаря применению трех карбюраторов вместо двух, новой полусферической форме камер сгорания и V-образной установке верхних клапанов вместо обычной параллельной.
