Unit Thirteen

AT A HOTEL

David Hook is in Minsk. He is at the Belarus Hotel. He needs a room for 5 nights He goes to the reception desk.

D.H.: Good afternoon.

Receptionist: Good afternoon, sir. May I help you?

D.H.: Yes, I need a room for 5 days.

R.: I’m sorry, sir, but we have no vacancies. There is a convention in the city this week.

D.H.: Oh, I see. Could you be so kind as to telephone another hotel for me and ask if they have any vacancies?

R.: Of course, one moment, please. (She calls another hotel.)

They have some vacancies in the Ubileinaya hotel.

D.H.: Great! How do I get there?

R.: Well, you must...

David is now at the Ubileinaya Hotel. He speaks to the Receptionist.

D.H.: Good afternoon.

R.: Good afternoon.

D.H.: The receptionist of the Belarus Hotel told me that you have rooms here.

R.: Yes, of course.

D.H.: Great! I need a room for 5 days.

R.: OK, may I have your first and your last name, please?

D.H.: David Hook. D.A.V.I.D H.O.O.K.

R.: May I have your home address, please, as well.

D.H.: 47 Glenwood Drive, Los Angeles, CA 59636.

R.: And your telephone number, please.

D.H.: (415) 226-4123

R.: And your passport number, please.

D.H.: M 745291

R.: 'The date of issue and the date of expiration.

D.H.: The date of issue is May 25, 1999 and the expiration date is May 25, 2009.

R.: OK, sign here, please.

D.H.: All right. (He signs.)

R.: That will be $400, please.

D.H.: OK...

David Hook has free time on Sunday night and he wants to eat in a restaurant. He decides to eat in the hotel restaurant. He goes there and waits for the maitre d’ of the hotel.

Maitre d': Good evening, sir. How many will be in your party tonight?
D.H.: Only me. I'm dining alone tonight.

Maitre d': OK, sir. Come right this way. We have a table for you by the window.

D.H.: Great! (She shows him to the table.)

Maitre d': Here is a menu. The cocktail waitress will be with you in a moment.

The cocktail waitress arrives.

C.W.: Good evening, sir. Would you care for a drink this evening?

D.H.: Yes, I would. Do you have any imported beer?

C.W.: Yes, we have German. Dutch and British imports.

D.H.: I'll have a German beer, please.

C.W.: OK, I'll be back in a second with your beer, sir.

The waitress arrives.

W.: Good evening, sir. Are you ready to order or shall I give you a few more minutes to look over the menu?

D.H.: No, I'm ready to order.

W.: OK.

D.H.: I'll take the chicken salad and the vegetable plate to begin with and the fish for the main dish.

W.: Would you like the fruit plate as well?

D.H.: No, thank you.

W.: Will that be all?

D.H.: Yes.

In a few minutes the cocktail waitress brings David his beer and the waitress brings him his food. After he has eaten the waitress returns.

W.: How was your meal, sir?

D.H.: Just fine, thanks.

W.: Would you care for dessert and coffee or tea?

D.H.: Yes. I'll have ice-cream and coffee, please.

She brings his coffee and dessert and he eats it. Afterwards he wants to leave. He sees his waitress.

D.H.: Excuse me, miss, can I have the check, please?

W: Sure. One moment, please.
