THE PACIFIC, THE ATLANTIC AND THE INDIAN OCEAN

The Pacific Ocean, largest of our three ocean basins, is nearly as large as The Indian and Atlantic Oceans combined and it contains slightly more than half the water in the world ocean. The Pacific has the greatest (3940m) because it includes few shallow marginal seas. It also contains the deepest areas in the oceans nearly 11,000m in several trenches along its western margin. Relatively few rivers discharge into the Pacific Ocean.

In contrast to the Pacific, The Atlantic Ocean is relatively narrow, twisted body of water, bounded by nearly parallel continental margin. Including the Arctic sea, the Atlantic ocean has the greatest north-south extent. It connects the northern polar regions. Because of its many shallow adjacent seas and broad continental shelves, the Atlantic is the shallowest of the three oceans – its average depth is 3310 m. Many rivers, including the world’s two largest the Amazon and the Congo discharge into the Atlantic. Unlike the Pacific, the Atlantic Ocean has few islands.

The Indian Ocean is bordered by Africa and Asia. It extends only a short distance across the equator into the Northern Hemisphere; its northern limit lies at roughly 25degrees N. It has few islands or adjacent seas. The average depth of the Indian Ocean (3840 m) is intermediate between the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean average.

Oceanographers subdivide the world ocean into parts according to the depth of the bottom, distribution of living organisms, currents, climate and properties such as the amount of salt content of the water. Using the names given by geographers, most oceanographers refer only to three major subdivisions: the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Antarctic. Some consider the Indian Ocean separate others include it as part of the Pacific and Antarctic Oceans. The Arctic Ocean, all agree, is really a part of the Atlantic. But remember that all these “oceans” are only parts of the world ocean.

Ex.5 Study the text in class and retell it:

In shallow places the ocean’s water appears to be light green or muddy colored, white in deeper sections it seems to be blue, gray or dark green. These colors change frequently depending upon whether it is a sunny or cloudy day at the time. Oceanographers know that the water itself has no color; color in the ocean’s water is due to the reflection of the sky or materials in the water. Some seas have been given unusual names because they are colored by plant and animal life living in their depths or because muddy rivers flow into them. The Red Sea, the Black Sea and the Yellow Sea are examples of suchnames.
