The 2ND Engineer is responsible that all the compartments containing spares, stores, chemicals etc. are in clean, dry, well ventilated and arranged condition.

The keys to the respective locker / compartment are to be kept by the 2ND Engineer.

 

 

EXPOSED SPARE PARTS WITHIN THE ENGINE ROOM

All the bigger size spares such as pistons, liners, bearings etc. shall be inspected, cleaned and protected against corrosion and dirt.

It is the 2ND Engineer’s duty - assisted by the 3RD Engineer or Fitter that above is strictly followed and adhered to it.

All the exposed parts shall be clearly marked of any abnormalities, if any, such as - Repairs carried out - dimensions etc.

 

BILGES

Any leaks to the engine room bilges are to be brought to the attention of duty engineer and eliminated immediately in the best possible way.

 

ELECTRIC AND AUTOMATION ON BOARD

Poor lighting in the engine room may lead to accidents to personnel and risks to machinery in way of undetected leaks or cracks or loosen parts etc.

It is therefore of utmost importance that adequate lighting is maintained at all times.

The Electrician is in charge to maintain the lighting all around the vessel in

good order with appropriate connections.

The Electrician shall carry out a daily inspection all around the vessel and replace/repair the lighting system where required, including the Reefer -Container plugs, deck machinery.

 

CHEMICALS:

REMEMBER!

Proper use of the respective product in terms of concentration, dosage rates and particularly about the safety measures which are mainly the following:

Always read the instructions how to use and when to use the product

Always use goggles when handling the products

Always use gloves when handling the products

Always remove only the quantity you intend to consume

Always use clean and dry containers to handle the products

Always ask the 2ND Engineer in case of any doubts.

 

Never use the chemicals for the following:

Hand and face washing

Clothe washing

Cleaning of food and provision tools and gears

On hot areas

Drinking water lines and valves and filters etc

For mixing- with any kind of liquids or/and material

 

NOTE: FOR ALL CHEMICAL PRODUCTS SAFETY DATA SHEET ARE ISSUED AND ARE TO BE READ BEFORE ANY HANDLING WITH THE PRODUCT.

ALSO FIRST AID MEASURES ARE TO BE READ.

 

HOT WORKS - WELDING

Any kind of works involving heat or welding (gas and electric) shall be carried out only by qualified crew and supervised by the 2ND Engineer at all times.

Every hot work to be performed outside of designated hot work area (workshop) is to be prepared and done according to BSM procedures – see Document No. 4891.

 

PAINTING IN THE ENGINE ROOM AND MACHINERIES

The following painting procedure shall apply as a standard:

All corroded surfaces to be proper cleaned, chipped if necessary, and made free of oil

and grease and dry

One „priming“ coat of anticorrosive paint to be applied

Second „top“ coat of anticorrosive paint to be applied

 

All paint and their specification as well as the applying mode and cycles can be read in the paint-manufacturer’s instruction manual.

 

NOTE: OBSERVE ALL PRECAUTION MEASURES AND SAFETY REGULATION WHEN PAINTING THE ENGINE ROOM AND/OR MACHINERY!
