When to go to Spain

Spain is a year-round destination, if you are planning to travel to Spain and you are wondering when to come to Spain or which is the best season; this decision is closely related to the weather, your time and the events going on; sometimes it’s related to the industry and costs. In this page we’ll give you detailed information on when to come to Spain and why.

If you’re looking for nice holiday weather, the ideal months are May, June and September and if you travel to the South of Spain April and October are also great months based on the climate. Visiting Spain in summer is recommended due to the warm weather and some tours that only operate during summer, but the climate in some places is too hot and it turns even worse with the large number of tourists that visit Spain in this season. Spring and fall are ideal times to visit Spain.

August is the major vacation month in Europe; through this month it is almost impossible to find low-cost services, such as hotels and restaurants.

Getting Around Spain

Spain is well-connected by an efficient transportation system that includes extensive roads, railways, a great air travel network and ports connecting major towns, so there’s no excuse to stop from traveling to every part of the country; Spain is an important link between Europe, Africa and America due to its location.

We include the most important information about transportation in Spain, with information on how to get around Spain by air, train, car, taxi, waterways, and more. If you visit Spain it will be useful to know all of this because Spain is one of the largest countries in Europe, and traveling around Spain will take you some time.

Spain by Bus

Buses reach places that trains can’t, that is why many people prefer buses over trains, due to their schedules and variety of destinations, especially in some routes such as: Seville-Salamanca, Cadiz-Ronda, Salamanca-Santiago, Segovia Avila from Marbella to anywhere, because it doesn’t have a train station. In addition, the train services in southern areas of Spain are poor.

However, buses in Spain are very comfortable and efficient but a bit complex for tourists due to the large number of lines such as:

· ALSA/ENATCAR

· AUTO RES

· BILMAN BUS

· DAINCO

· EUROLINES

· GUAGUAS (Local transport in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, routes.)

· LA SEPULVEDANA

· METROPOLITAN BUSES (Gran Canaria)

· TITSA (Tenerife InterCity Buses)

· TRAPSA (Metropolitan & Commuter Buses)

· CÁCERES

· MADRID (ESTACIÓN SUR)

· MÁLAGA

· SANTANDER

A quality bus service means that buses are implemented with toilets on board for journeys over an hour or two, in case of distance journeys(довготривала поїздка), buses should stop every few hours so that passengers can stretch their legs, get some fresh air and snacks.

Spain by Train

Rail transportation in Spain is fast, efficient and cheap in most of its routes; main cities have local networks connecting smaller towns and villages that are considered to have the worst trains (except on major commuting routes in and out of Madrid and Barcelona). Railroad system includes High Speed, Long Distance, Regional and Commuter trains.

The National rail transport operator is RENFE and offers a great service in all its long-distance routes but in short-distance trains it suffers long delays; it controls most local regional and national routes. You can book your tickets in advance at www.renfe.es.

High-Speed trains are operated by:

EUROMED trains serve these routes: Barcelona – Valencia/Alicante.

ALTARIA trains serve these routes: Madrid – Alicante, Madrid - Córdoba - Algeciras, Madrid - Granada, Madrid - Sevilla - Cádiz, Madrid - Sevilla - Huelva, Madrid - Pamplona, Madrid - Logroño, Madrid - Murcia - Cartagena.

If you have your own car it will be a great experience but if you don’t, you can hire one.

By Taxi:

All major cities in Spain feature taxi services but this is, maybe, the most expensive way to get around although these are more convenient and quicker than other means of transportation; most drivers in Spain do not speak foreign languages so it’ll be useful to have the addresses of your destinations written in Spanish if you don’t count with an interpreter.

Spain Hitching

Spain is divided into 50 provinces, each one counts with an awesome atmosphere and beautiful landscapes that people can enjoy by traveling around the country; the most common ways are: By bus, train and car but some people prefer to get around by hitching. But if you want to avoid the weight of packages, you can contact hotels and other accommodation places.

Some of the most popular destinations for biking tours in Spain are:Camino Santiago, Madrid, Andalusia, Catalonia and Green Spain:

· Camino de Santiago: Saint James Way is possibly the oldest touristic trail(туристичний шлях); although the journey was traditionally made for religious reasons, nowadays it’s preferred by tourists because of the infinite amount of stories and secrets it hides.

Best of Spain

The Alhambra in Granada

This monumental Moorish fortified palace is inscribed is considered as a world heritage site by the UNESCO. It has an extraordinary beauty. Its plateau gives a broad outlook over the city of Granada and plains situated in eastward and southward from the city. Moorish poets compare Alhambra to "a pearl imbedded in an emerald" in relation to the colours of the palace's buildings and forests altogether.

The palace is unbelievably brilliant! Its founder was the Moorish sultan Muhammad I, who was also known as Ibn al-Ahmar, in 1284. Its construction was completed in 1354. When Christians defeated Granada, the complex went through a period of destruction. However, Alhambra remains as the most beautiful example of Moorish Art. Later, they made extensions to the palace. An Arabic style can be found in the decoration of the palace. It has a strict and traditional model of leaves and geometric decorations that were elaborated in arabesques. Decorated areas are mostly seen on wall coatings.

The palace is surrounded by the Alameda de la Alhambra Park. There is rich flora such as the green, orange trees, myrrh and elm trees during the spring. The park is well known for its nightingale singing as well as for water running from many fountains and waterfalls.

Gaudi's Barcelona

One of Spain's most visited places is Barcelona. The highlights of the city are the impressive and original constructions of the architect Antonio Gaudi (1852-1926.) His work is a mix of the Secession, Modernism, nature motifs, elements of Arabic-Spanish art and emphatic colours. All of these components have made the city of Barcelona very unique and impressive to the world. Several Gaudi's constructions are considered as a world heritage site by the UNESCO. Gaudi's most important constructions are: La Sagrada Familia (Cathedral of the Sacred Family), which became a symbol of the city, Casa Milà (a house nicknamed "La Pedrera"), Casa Batlló and the large Güell's Park where the Museum of Gaudi is located along with many buildings and sculptures that were designed with Gaudi's typical "broken tile" style in addition to elegant organic curves.

Spanish Art

If you like to contemplate the best works of Spanish artists, you should visit the Miró Foundation that is located in Barcelona, Goya's masterpieces at the Museum del Prado, in Madrid and Picasso's Guernica at the Museum of National Artistic Centre of Reina Sofia (also in Madrid.) However, an important collection of Picasso's work is placed at the new Picasso Museum in Malaga, his birth city. The last but not least art works belonging to Salvador Dali are located in his surrealistic museum/mausoleum in Figueres, located at the north of Spain.

Andalusia

This very sunny part of Spain attracts tourists from all around the world. Maybe it is because of its lovely sea or because of its long history and tradition. Nevertheless, Andalusia is the most beautiful region of Spain.

Toledo

The city of Toledo lays 70 km northward from Madrid holds precious monuments, art and handicrafts. That's why, a tourist should reserve at least 2 days for a sightseeing tour. The city was also named a world heritage site by the UNESCO.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are located north-westward from the African continent. The islands consist of several smaller islands such as Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Palma. Beautiful nature, big number of sand beaches and miscellaneous cuisines are the best part of the islands. The islands are sometimes called the "Islands of the Eternal Spring". Its subtropical location attracts loads of tourists from all around the world. Four of seven main Spain's natural reservations are located just there. The islands' landscape varies a lot; so, you can find there everything from sand dunes via wild rainforest to high peaks such as the active volcano Mount Teide (Spain's highest mountain.)

Flamenco

Flamenco is a typical music-dancing style of Andalusia. This dance style arose among Gypsies who arrived to Andalusia in the 15th century. As they passed through countries such as India, Pakistani and Egypt, it was possible to notice a mix of the Gypsy culture with other cultures. Flamenco experienced a decline 25 years ago; however, its importance has been regained thanks to tourism. Flamenco dancers use colourful and long skirts that follow the sound of clapping castanets and fascinating rhythms produced by flamenco guitars.

Communications in Spain

Post offices in Spain are known as “Correo” and are often found around the city centres. They’re usually open Mondays to Saturdays from 8 am to noon and from 5 pm to 7.30 pm. They generally don’t work on Sundays. However, in large cities large post offices operate at noon as well. Normally there’s only one post office in towns and villages. Stamps are known as “sellos,” and can be bought in post offices, tobacconists (brown and yellow labelled), hotel receptions, and sometimes in stands selling postcards. A 0.65 EUR stamp needs to be used for both a postcard and a letter when posting to European countries and a 0.80 EUR stamp when sending to outside of Europe.

Stamps are mostly of cylindrical shape and yellow coloured. Some of them are available without a nominal value Such stamps are valid but since they are handled by a private international company (not by the post office), you need to insert them into specially assigned post boxes placed in shops and hotel receptions, where you can buy the stamps as well.

Public phones in Spain work reliably well, and you can find them on streets or in many bars. They include instructions of use in English besides Spanish and/or Catalonian. In Spain call-shops are known as “locutorios,” and they are very convenient to make cheap national and international phone calls; to landlines or mobile phones. There are many of these in the cities of Spain, most cabins provide instructions in several languages and dialing codes of overseas and Spanish locations.

Cellular Service for Spain is based on the GSM technology utilizing 900 and 1800 MHz networks for mobile phones. All European cell phones are compatible for use in Spain but cellular phones from Japan or the United State are often not. Before you leave for your holiday, contact your phone provider and ask if your cell phone has the 900 and 1800 bands and if it is unlocked, meaning, able to use another SIM card.

Email is one of the best communication facilities when you like to keep in touch with your home-folks. You can send your e-mails from your hotel or numerous internet cafes (“ cibercafes ”) or call-shops.

Costs, Money And Banks in Spain

Spain has stopped being as cheap as it was before; however, it’s still cheaper than northern Europe. What you will spend for your holiday depends on many factors, like the province or town you choose to stay in, or the activities you decide to dothere. Entrance fee to most monuments is quite cheap. Public transport is offered at an affordable price, (excluding high-speed trains, which can be faster than some plane flights).

If you prefer travelling as a backpackeraround your shoulders, you can expect to spend around € 40 per day for youth/backpacker hostels and food. If you prefer moderate expenses, then you will fit between 100 and 150 Euros per day including full board in a three-star hotel. In case you would rather enjoy a five-star hotel plus some gourmet delicacies, then you’d be looking at several hundred Euros a day.

The official currency, that changed Spanish pesetas, has been the Euro since the January 1st, 2002.

In Spain usingyour credit or debit cards are not a problem. They are widely accepted at restaurants and hotels (particularly from moderate to luxury ranks). You can pay with cards in supermarkets and many shops. Cash machines are also very frequent financial tools in this country, so there’s no need to worry, even if you are situated in a small town. Another option to get your money to Spain is to use the wide network of Western Union. Alternatively, you can pay via the increasingly popular PayPal.

Warning: be careful of pickpockets! Don’t place your money neither at upper pockets of your backpacks and rucksacks nor in your camera bags and so on. Spanish holiday sites are popular places for pickpockets, especially now that there’s a financial crisis and unemployment in Spain. It is always an option to divide your cash in several places, so you don’t lose everything if robbed or assaulted. And it’s better to avoid bringing too much cash with you unless necessary, and after ruling out the options stated above (PayPal, credit and debit cards). Travellers cheques can be cashed at exchange offices or banks (however, for a bit higher exchange rate compared to cash).
