Half the students will support the first position, and half the second position. Students will need 20 minutes or more to prepare.
Support: In smaller groups, students should create a list in support of their position. They should include any evidence, reasoning, and/or information to support the position.
Preparing for Rebuttal: Each group should prepare a second list in which they predict the line of reasoning of their opponents and develop defenses against these attacks.
The Debate: Members from one side are allowed to present a specific argument for one minute. The other side is allowed to rebut that argument for one minute. That side is then allowed to present an argument one minute, and the other side is allowed a one-minute rebuttal. Thus, each member of the class should participate.
Goal: The apparent goal of a debate is to convince others that one’s view is correct. But that is not the only benefit. Learners will practice persuasive skills in English, develop critical thinking skills, and learn organization. Afterwards, the teacher will take a survey to see if the debate has changed or shifted anyone’s position on the subject.

Do some Internet research and come to class prepared to make a two-minute presentation on one of the following topics.
Describe the life of the minorities in this city. How do they live? Are they wealthy, poor, or middle class? What jobs do they have? What problems do they face? What advantages do they have?
