Life-Saving Appliances

The general principal governing the provision of life-boats, life-rafts and buoyant apparatus in a ship is that they shall be readily available in case of emergency. No type of buoyant apparatus shall be approved unless it satisfies the following conditions:

a) It shall be of such size and strength that it can be thrown from the place where it is stowed into the water without being damaged;

b) It shall not exceed 180 kilos in weight;

c) It shall be of approved material and construction;

d) It shall be effective and stable when floating either way up.

All the life-saving appliances shall be kept in working order and available for immediate use before the ship leaves port and all times during the voyage.

Life-jacket:

a) it shall be constructed with proper materials;

b) it shall be capable of lifting the face of an exhausted or unconscious person out of the water and holding it above the water;

c) it shall not be affected by oil or oil products;

d) it shall be of a highly visible color;

e) it shall be fitted with an approved whistle;

f) life-jackets shall be so placed as to be readily accessible and their position shall be plainly indicated.

A life-buoy shall satisfy the following requirements:

a) it shall be of a solid cork or any other equivalent material;

b) it shall be capable of supporting in fresh water for 24 hours at least;

c) it shall not be affected by oil or oil products;

d) it shall be of a highly visible color;

e) it shall be marked in block letters with the name and port of registry of the ship in which it is carried;

f) it should be provided with self-igniting light which cannot be extinguished by water. At least 8 life-buoys shall be carried on a cargo ship.

The immersion suit

The immersion suit shall be constructed with waterproof materials such that:

a) it can be unpacked and donned without assistance within 2 min, taking into account any associated clothing, and a lifejacket if the immersion suit is to be worn in conjunction with a lifejacket;

b) it will not sustain burning or continue melting after being totally enveloped in a fire for a period of 2 seconds;

c) it will cover the whole body with the exception of the face. Hands shall also be covered unless permanently attached gloves are provided;

d) it is provided with arrangements to minimize or reduce free air in the legs of the suit;

e) following a jump from a height of not less than 4.5 m into the water there is no undue ingress of water into the suit.

An immersion suit which also complies with the requirements of life-jackets may be classified as a life-jacket. An immersion suit which has buoyancy and is designed to be worn without a lifejacket shall be fitted with a light and the whistle complying with the requirements for life-jackets.

If the immersion suit is to be worn in conjunction with a lifejacket, the lifejacket shall be worn over the immersion suit. A person wearing such an immersion suit shall be able to don a lifejacket without assistance.

Life-boats

The lifeboats are stored on the boat davits on both sides of the ship. In case of emergency, the crew

can board the lifeboat and escaped with the lifeboat directly from its stowage position.

All lifeboats shall be properly constructed and shall be of such form and proportions that they have ample stability in a seaway and sufficient freeboard when loaded with their full complement of persons and equipment. All lifeboats shall have rigid hulls and shall be capable of maintaining positive stability when in an upright position in calm water and loaded with their full complement of persons and equipment and holed in any one location below the waterline, assuming no loss of buoyancy material and no other damage.

Life-rafts

Every liferaft shall be so constructed as to be capable of withstanding exposure for 30 days afloat in all sea conditions. The liferaft shall be so constructed that when it is dropped into the water from a height of 18 m, the liferaft and its equipment will operate satisfactorily. If the liferaft is to be stowed at a height of more than 18 m above the waterline in the lightest seagoing condition, it shall be of a type which has been satisfactorily drop-tested from at least that height.

The liferaft and its fittings shall be so constructed as to enable it to be towed at a speed of 3 knots in calm water when loaded with its full complement of persons and equipment and with one of its sea-anchors streamed.

Rescue boats

Rescue boats may be either of rigid or inflated construction or a combination of both and shall:

a) be not less than 3.8 m and not more than 8.5 m in length; and

b) be capable of carrying at least five seated persons and a person lying on a stretcher.

Rescue boats shall be capable of manoeuvring at a speed of at least 6 knots and maintaining that speed

for a period of at least 4 hours.

3 Learn your donning instructions by heart:

Donning instructions can be found in cabins and deck lockers. You should be able to don lifejacket in less than one minute. Slip jacket overhead. Make sure straps are securely fastened. There’s a whistle to gain attention. There’s a strobe light. Some jackets feature reflective stripes. Secure jacket when jumping from vessel. Cover nose and mouth when jumping from vessel.
