Cambrian Mountains

Region of hills, plateaux, and deep valleys in Wales, 175 km/ 110 mi long, linking Snowdonia in the northwest and the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains in the south.

The Cambrian Mountains are in the heart of Wales, the source of the Severn, Twyi, and Wye rivers. The highest peak is Aran Fawddwy (905m/ 2,950 ft) in the Berwyn Mountains in the centre. The area is sparsely populated, with livestock farming the chief occupation.

This barren and sparsely populated wilderness is often referred to affectionately as the Desert of Wales.

The highest point of the range is Pumlumon. The area includes the source of the River Severn and River Wye, and has been proposed as a National Park. It is the type of locality of the Cambrian period of the Paleozoic era (542-488Ma).

Cefn Croes, the site of a controversial wind farm project, is in the Cambrian Mountains, just south of the A44 road between Aberystwyth and Llangurig

Nestled in the northwest corner of Wales, Snowdonia is home to one of the most popular National Parks in Great Britain. Over 8 million people a year flock to the region. Most of them to visit the jewel in the Park’s crown – the Snowdon mountain.

There is much more to explore in this craggy region than Snowdon, though.

Mountain Rescue

Snowdon is one of the most visited mountains in Britain. Unsurprisingly, it also has one of the busiest mountain rescue teams. Every year they are called out on nearly a hundred calls to help injured or missing walkers.

The whole of the Snowdon area is served by a handful of Mountain Rescue Teams. All the members are local to the area and are on call 365 days of the year.

The Rescue teams are all volunteers and each one is an experienced mountaineer.

The teams are also assisted by the 22nd Squadron of the R.A.F who are based near by.
