Pedagogical University in Yaroslavl is one of the oldest educational establishments in Russia. It was founded in 1908. There were just 29 students in the first year of studies. Then it was transformed into a teachers’ training college. The specific conditions of the development of education in various regions of the country called for a flexible approach of training school teachers. In 1924 the Teachers’ Training College of Yaroslavl was transformed into an independent university – an educational establishment training secondary school-teachers - the Pedagogical Institute of Yaroslavl. The Institute has accumulated a great deal of experience in training schoolteachers. In the course of time in has become a well-staffed educational establishment.
The Institute inherited rich library funds in which there are the books from Demidovsky Lyceum. In 1846 a great Russian educator K. D. Ushinsky started his professor teaching in that Lyceum. The general public of Yaroslavl, supporting spiritual and cultural traditions of the local territory, is proud of this fact and reveres the great educator’s memory. In 1945 our country marked the 75th anniversary of Ushinsky’s death and then the Yaroslavl Pedagogical Institute was named after K. D. Ushinsky. That’s why we are obliged to take after the great educator’s progressive ideas. Propagate them and study the father of Russian teachers’ education and theory heritage, his life story and public activities. During two decades the Yaroslavl Pedagogical Institute, being the only higher establishment in the region, attracted large intellectual parts of the region, and, as a matter of fact, acted as a university-level establishment providing highly educated teaching staff not only for public education put also for other social spheres of the region. The Yaroslavl Pedagogical Institute graduates work in all state and public structures of the Yaroslavl Region. In December of 1993 the Yaroslavl Pedagogical Institute also became a pedagogical university.
At present the Yaroslavl Pedagogical University trains teachers for the country’s schools. The University has ten faculties: Physics and Mathematics, Biology and Geography, History, Russian Philology any Culture, Modern Foreign Languages, Primary and Physical Education, etc. Students are trained in over twenty teaching specialties. This University trains six thousand students of two types: 3,5 thousand full-time students and 2,5 thousand extra-mural students. In the University there are more two secondary faculties: supplementary pedagogical pr0fessions and preparatory faculty of pre-institute training.
The University has been keeping in close scientific touch with over 60 research institutes and leading higher educational establishment of the Russian Federation and the3 Commonwealth of Independent States. At present Ushinsky university has several exchange programmes and has sighed treaties for cooperation with ten universities and colleges of the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Poland, Holland and others. The main goal of the University has always been further improvement of the level of teachers’ professional training, improving instructional and educational work, bettering contacts with the local schools, developing scientific pedagogical research, generalizing and prorogating the exchange of the pedagogical experience.
Students have at their disposal well-equipped laboratories and studyrooms, a Computer and a TV Centers, an Astronomical Observatory, Geological, Anatomical and Zoological museums, a Library, a Botanical Garden, 4 Gymnasia, 4 Canteens, Rest-Zone Grounds, a Sports Camp and a Preventive Clinic. The TV education centre and the Institute Departments work out and make use of videomaterials in various subjects at the tutorials and lectures. Videomaterials are available and can be obtained by other higher learning schools, which is already being done by 160 institutes of Russia.
The Departments of the University actively introduce new flexible multileveled study plans, the rating system of control which helps to avoid exam subjectivity and use each student’s potential abilities successfully. They also increase the number of selective subjects for students providing them with specialization in several subjects.
In the study process scientific research elements of teaching are being intensively used, first and foremost they are used in solving pedagogical problems, half of all diploma papers are defended on these problems. Teaching methods provision of education and instruction process is achieved by intensive work of the University publishing house printing over 100 ptinter’s sheets of various materials in teaching methods annually.
