Text 1. Komi Republic
The land of the Komi people occupies spacious areas in the north east of Russia’s European part, but it is a sparsely-populated Republic. The Komi people is one of the North’s oldest. It belongs to the big group of the Finno-Ugric peoples.
The climate is moderately cold with a lengthy and frosty winter and a short cool summer. The average temperature of January is 15 degrees below zero and that of July is 16 degrees above zero.
Syktyvkar became the capital of Komi in 1936. Ust-Sysolsk is the old name of the town. It was mentioned in written documents in 1586. In 1780 Ust-Sysolsk was given the status of the town, its emblem being a sleeping bear in a den. The name of the town is hard to pronounce, and it is translated as the “town on the river Sysola”. It is located in a picturesque spot amidst taiga-forests at the confluence of two navigable rivers – the Sysola and the Vychegda. There are a lot of scenic places there.
In the 19th century Ust-Sysolsk became the place of exile for progressive people who opposed the tsarist regime. After the war with Napoleon in 1812, about 100 French prisoners of war lived in Ust-Sysolsk. That place has retained its name up to the present moment – the borough Paris. In 1966 Syktyvkar was awarded the order of Lenin.
At present Syktyvkar is a big administrative, industrial and cultural centre of the Republic. First of all it is the seat of the Komi Government. Its population is 220 thousand people.
The Komi Branch of the Ural Academy of Sciences, the Komi State Pedagogical Institute, the Timber Institute, and the State University are the main academic institutions in the town. There are also many secondary schools, technical schools and colleges in it.
There is a big industrial complex producing all sorts of paper in the vicinity of Syktyvkar.
The cultural life of the town is many-sided and diverse. There are two theatres – the Theatre of Opera and Ballet, the Drama Theatre, a concert hall, museums, libraries, sport complexes and swimming pools. Many of the streets are named after the heroes of the Komi people in the Civil and Great Patriotic War to honor their memory. People of more than 70 nationalities live now in Syktyvkar.
Syktyvkar is not big and there are not so many high buildings in it. But Syktyvkar is a good place to live in, I think.
The Institute I study at is in the central street – Kommunisticheskaya. It stretches from the railway station up to the river Sysola. It is a busy and noisy street as it is the main street of the capital. Several cafes, shops, a supermarket, a cinema, some offices are located here.
The centre of the town is Stephanovskaya Square where New Year and other celebrations take place.
There are some memorials in Syktyvkar: to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, monument to Lenin and to Kuratov.
To the conclusion (to sum it up), Syktyvkar is growing and becoming more beautiful especially in summer with its green trees. Syktyvkar is an ordinary town, no different from many other cities, but it holds me to it so strongly. When I am far away I miss my family, my friends and my town.
