Odessa region

The oblast occupies an area of around 33,300 square kilometres (12,900 sq mi). Its Black Sea coast comprises numerous sandy beaches, estuaries and lagoons. The region's soils are renowned for their fertility, and intensive agriculture is the mainstay of the local economy. The southwest possesses many orchards and vineyards, while arable crops are grown throughout the region.

The oblast's population (as of 2004) is 2.4 million people, nearly 40% of whom live in the city of Odessa.

 

 

 

 

Potemkin Steps

 

Fantastic part of Odessa history, built between 1837 and 1841, there are 200 steps which takes you down to the sea port of Odessa.

 

Odessa State Academical Opera and Ballet Theater

Designed by Austrian architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. Built in 1884-1887 at the site of a previous theatre, which was destroyed by fire in 1873. Opened 13 October, 1887. Lately in 1998-2001 the building underwent foundation repair works, and in 2003-2005 major exterior and interior renovation. The main entrance to the theatre is located at Lanzheronovskaya (Langeron) Street

Passage

Passage is an outside corridor which connects Deribasovskaya str. with Transafiguration str. Constructed by Polish architect Vlodek, in 1898-1899 it is one of the best examples of Odessa Baroque. At the beginning of the 20th century it served as a huge book store. At the moment it's also full of small shops with a hotel on the top.

 

 

 


The Odessa Port

The Port of Odessa or Odessa Marine Trade Port (OMTP) is the largest Ukrainian seaport and one of the largest ports in the Black Sea basin, with a total annual traffic capacity of 40 million tonnes (15 million tonnes dry bulk and 25 million tonnes liquid bulk). The port has an immediate access to railways allowing quick transfer of cargo from sea routes to ground transportation. Along with its younger satellite ports of Illichivsk (1958) and Southern (1973) port of Odessa is a major freight and passenger transportation hub of Ukraine.
