HEALTHY HOBBIES

By the way a person uses his leisure his character can be told. In their leisure time people do what they really want to do, and their real selves are reflected in their actions.

Some people are passive, they spend their free time at a place where no effort is required by them: a café, a night club, at home, using the Internet, watching TV or gossiping on the phone.

A different type of person is full of ideas, he plans some interesting schemes for his leisure time. This is a creative type of character. For him his leisure time is full of activity.

Hobby is a wonderful occupation for leisure time. But it is not only an occupation. Hobbies teach us all sort of things and they do it in a pleasurable way.

For example, stamp collecting is more than just having a lot of stamps. It’s our entry into the whole world of culture and history.

Such hobbies as carpentry or model engineering teach us practical skills and the basics of science. There are clubs for construction enthusiasts, so you won’t be alone and will learn quite useful things.

Gardening or music are the hobbies which teach us to enjoy the beautiful.

Another hobby is cultivation of pen- or keyfriends. You’ll get a lot of interesting letters sent to you by all sorts of interesting people from remote and exotic places. You’ll learn a lot of things about the culture of different countries and at least some words from a foreign language.

Some hobbies keep us fit: boating, hiking, camping. With sport the competitive spirit is given its outlet. You’ll get discipline, respect for the judge or the rule-book. (And it’s a very useful social quality.)

The life of a person can really be full and rich thanks to his hobbies. It’s also a wonderful chance to make friends!

gossiping - сплетничать

carpentry - работа по дереву

outlet - выход

9. I enjoy i) pop-music

10. I love j) poetry and art.

8. Here are some ways to tell about a hobby or a pastime.

1. Sport is a very important part of our life. Many people go in for sports: jogging, walking, swimming, skating, skiing. They train themselves in gyms and different sections. They play volleyball, football, basketball. Why do they do it? They think it’s very important for a man to be strong and well-built. Sport is not for weak, because you have to learn how to win (and it’s not easy) and how to loose (and it’s even more difficult).

2. I’m fond of music. I think people just can’t live without it. As for me, the first thing I do in the morning I switch on my player. We can hear music everywhere: in the streets, in the shops, on TV, over the radio, in the cars, in the parks, really everywhere. I think it doesn’t matter what kind of music you prefer: rock, pop, classical, jazz. People who love music regularly go to the shops and buy discs or look for new records in the Net. They go to the concerts when some popular star singer comes on tour, visit concert halls or musical theatres. Some cover walls of their rooms with posters of their favourite groups and performers. Why do people listen to music? They do it because it reflects their moods and emotions. When they’re sad, they play their favourite tunes and feel much better. Some people even play musical instruments themselves, sing in the chorus or groups, try to compose music or songs.

3. Many people watch TV at leisure. One can choose anything one likes best. Those who like music can listen to various concerts. Sport fans can watch football or hockey matches. Some people hurry to their TV set to see a new programme of their favourite reality show or sitcom, others prefer cognitive programmes: “What?Where? When?”, “Your Game”, “How to Become a Millionaire”. My favourite TV programmes are those that extend our knowledge about the world in which we live, for example “Their Habits”. I find it enjoyable and entertaining. It’s a weekly programme, it is broadcast on Sunday. Programmes of this kind are very popular in our country. Millions of people can see different lands, unusual plants, animals and birds, mountains and oceans. They show many historical places, tell interesting facts about different countries and cities, broadcast interviews with famous people.

4. Some people prefer to see films on TV or video. But I like to go to the cinema. When I want to go to the cinema I usually see in the programme what films are on. Then I phone my friends and we discuss what films to see. But to tell the truth it doesn’t matter for me what kind of films they are: action, adventure, horror, sci-fi or drama. Even cartoons look much better on the big screen. To see a good love story, musical or detective film is a very pleasant way of spending free time. If I want to go to an evening show I usually buy tickets in advance, especially if it’s a premiere of some widely advertised blockbuster. But for matinee performances one may buy tickets just before the show.

5. My name is Carol. I’ve got a lot of hobbies but my favorite hobby is collecting records. On my twelfth birthday my uncle gave me a long-playing record. Its title was ‘The Frank Sinatra Collection’. At first I was a little disappointed because I wasn’t very much interested in listening to pop music but I wanted to make my uncle happy. So I played the record at once. And what a surprise! I liked most of these songs! It was the beginning of my hobby. At the moment I have 72 long-playing records and 55 singles. I know it’s an expensive hobby: I spend nearly all my pocket money on it. Some of my friends think I’m crazy because they can’t understand my passion. For example, last spring I wanted to buy several records. But all my money was gone. So I decided to look for some part-time job. Now I distribute a local newspaper every Thursday and I get $30 for it. That means one long-playing record and two singles! I only collect pop music, of course. I don’t like classical or folk music. And I’m afraid this will never change.

14. I learnt to __________ the violin when I was at school.

15. I wanted to improve my artistic skills, so I ___________ our college theatre society.

16. I don’t really __________ anything in my spare time.

10. Here are some people talking about their hobbies Can you guess what the hobby is in each case?

1. I usually use colour, but sometimes you get a better effect with black and white. It really depends on the subject.

2. I really enjoy going round the shops and markets looking for a bargain.

3. I try to practice every day, but sometimes it’s difficult because I don’t like to disturb my neighbours too much. And one neighbour gets very angry if I play the same thing over and over again

4. Obviously it saves me a lot of money; and in any case, I hate buying things in boutiques because so many things are badly made.

5. The great thing is you can do it when you like. I usually do it free or four times a week – either early in the morning or after school. I only go in for it about 25 minutes but it really keeps me fit.

6. I joined the club because I wanted to get better, and now I play twice a week in the evening. It has helped me a lot and I have a much better memory for all the different moves and strategies.

7. I think this is a very common hobby for people like me, who have a house but don’t have much money. That’s why I started, but now I think I do a better job than many professionals.

11. Read Susie’s letter and write a reply.

Dear Irina,

During my spare time, after I finish my homework, I go out with my friends. We have Saturdays and Sundays off school. During the day we can go shopping in malls. Most of the movie theaters are inside the malls.

My friends and I go to the movies, cafes, get together and gossip. At night we go to parties or to dance places. We also like to swim. Lots of us are in school sport. During the summer I go camping and play summer sports.

As for the money, I don’t have a job, but I do baby-sitting sometimes to earn some pocket money. From time to time my parents give me some money (if I haven’t caused them any problem) or my granny makes me a present of money for some occasion.

These are just a few things we do here in the USA in spare time. I’d be happy to hear from you and learn more about Russia.

Bye,

Susie

(21%). 14. Read the text and complete assignments after it.

(1) In the 16th century a favourite toy for children was the hobbyhorse. In appearance a hobbyhorse could be as simple as stick, or it could have decorated wooden framework with an imitation horse’s head attached. Whether simple or elaborate, children used them for the games of the time involving war and knighthood, much as children in the early part of the 20th century played cowboys and Indians. In time the popularity of the hobbyhorse declined, but the pleasure of doing something for a pastime, outside the routine activities, had brought a new word into the language, the word ‘hobby’, which is a shortened form of ‘hobbyhorse’.

(2) Hobbies today include a vast range of activities. The definition that best covers all these activities is probably ‘constructive leisure-time activities’. This definition excludes games and sports, and it leaves out purely spectator activities, like watching television. It also excludes schooling and work done to make a living. A hobby, like playing with a hobbyhorse, is an activity apart from the ordinary routines of life. It should encourage the use of creativity and imagination and bring the reward of learning.

(3) Before the 20th century, hobbies were something that only wealthy people had the time and money to enjoy. The present-day interest in hobbies throughout the world comes from the increased amount of free time available to far more people, as a result of shortened working hours and greater prosperity.

(4) Some popular hobbies are as old as civilization. These include such activities as music, dance, literature, painting, sculpture, carving and whittling, weaving, raising pets, astrology, hunting and fishing, as well as making pottery, baskets, beadwork and jewelry, kites, toys, leather goods, dolls, miniatures and models.

(5) Rulers in ancient times often collected valuable objects, rare manuscripts and art treasures. Later, individuals who were educated and had a broad range of interests made field trips and travelled to other countries, bringing back fossils, plants, artifacts and other objects. Such people also built up extensive personal libraries and collections.

(6) During the second half of the 19th century, the Arts and Crafts Movement in England prompted a great popular interest in handicrafts through a magazine called The Hobby Horse. There were a number of public exhibitions of handicrafts in England between 1888 and 1896, followed by similar expositions in Boston and Chicago in 1897.

(7) Hobbies are either consciously chosen, or they arise from a person’s skills, daily work or schooling. Stamp and coin collecting are examples of hobbies based on deliberate choice. Making model airplanes for a pastime may develop as a result of service in an air force or as an airline pilot. Designing computer programs can have something to do with an individual’s schooling.

(8) All hobbies involve activity, but some involve more than others. Collecting – whether antiques, coins or first editions of books – is relatively passive compared to doing one’s own paintings or making furniture.

(9) There have traditionally been four types of hobbies – those relating to history, nature, handicrafts and the arts. Recently, with advances in electronics many individuals have made computer use a hobby.
