Let’s celebrate together!!!
In January our Peace Corps Volunteer Laura Ludwig came with Jordan, an English teacher who conducts lessons in the western part of Ukraine. We spoke a lot about Martin Luther King Jr. We practiced English material by speaking and created our own dreams according to the famous M. L. King's speech”I have a dream…” We played games “5”, “Go fish”. At the end of the lesson we learnt the song Old Crow Medicine Show “Wagon Wheel”. Kids were very excited and they liked a lot this song. Celebrating Martin Luther's King Day
On Monday it was Martin Luther King Day, so on Tuesday our lesson was devoted to such topics as Black History Month and
Martin Luther King Day. It's very important and interesting for students to learn not only the language, but also to learn the culture, because such things are deeply connected. Students are really happy to have such an opportunity and we, teachers, are even happier because at Ukrainian schools all the program of learning English mostly connected with Grammar, reading and translating. And here students develop their speaking, critical thinking and cultural background. The first hour of the lesson we did in separate groups and classes(we did the same things but for Tonia's group there were less activities and more explanation of the vocabulary, because of different level of English) and the last 30 minutes we combined the groups to make the lesson more fun and friendly. We started our lesson with a little discussion about " Who is your Hero?" and we explained the students that for the Americans MLK was a real Hero and that all this month is very special and is called The Black History Month. We read the information about The Black History Month and then read about the life of MLK, and did different activities to learn the main facts, some of the exercises we did in pairs and some in groups, then we spoke about MLK's speech " I HAVE A DREAM" and listened to a rap song with some words from his speech and the text of the rap was about freedom of Black people, then in an hour the second group came to the class and we continued our lesson, we tried to sing that rap together, we made a craft work in groups (we made MLK from the paper), at the end we made all together a collage called"Friends" where we sticked the pictures of people of different nations and showed in such a way, that people all over the world shoud be equal and friendly.
