One day in Oxford University

Oxford is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It`s situated at a distance of 100 km from London. It`s the second largest one in Britain after London University. There are 20 000 students studying at Oxford from nearly 150 countries. Studying here can be an amazing experience. Most colleges are made of grey stone. They have stood there for many centuries. Some of these colleges are more than 700 years old. Oxford is an aristocratic university. Now there are 27 colleges for men, 5 for women and another five which have both ones. All the students at Oxford talk in a very superior way known as the Oxford accent, which is a bit like the BBC accent.

And now I`m going to tell you a story about my day in Oxford University.

Imagine waking up one day in a country that you`ve never been to and know no one there. It`s an incredible experience, and something that people will remember forever. Unfortunaly, I was in Oxford only one day but I got a lot of emotions from my trip. It was hard to communicate with native speakers. There is very visible difference between English speaking in our country and the British one. But after the first lessons I started to understand English more and to speak better. And of course it was great to visit the famous hall, where the action of world famous movie about Harry Potter has taken place. It was just incredible exciting to feel like the heroine of this film. My dream was realized!

I was impressed by the numerous broad streets. Everyone is clean and beautiful. We can see that this is the ancient seat of English learning.

I was at the Carfax Tower. It has amazing views aver the city and from here you can see that Oxford University really is at the heart of the city.

Each college of university has a dining-hall, a chapel and the residential rooms (enough to accommodate about half the student membership, the rest living in lodgings in the town). Special students, usually graduate students, - Dons – govern each college. There are about twenty or thirty Dons in each college. The Dons are responsible for teaching of the undergraduates. A Don gives personal instructions in undergraduates` study at least once a week. The Dons also elect the head of the college. This is a very interesting system.

A lot of students get involved in activities outside their studies. The Oxford University Fencing Club is over 100 years old. It`s still popular today.

The colleges vary very much in size and extent of grounds and buildings, and also in eminence – The biggest and the most magnificent is Christ Church, the chapel of which is also Oxford Cathedral.

Oxford isn`t only a learning and historical city. For a lover of old architecture, Oxford has much to offer. Many of the colleges present a lovely picture of ancient pearl-grey walls, noble towers, picturesque gothic archways.

The professors are wise and amazing. I had only one feel the spirit of England. I almost didn`t listen to the professor, I examined all around me. I couldn`t find any peace. It was amazing.

When the lessons was over I went to the cafe and drank some black tea with tasty cookies. I looked at people walking by the street. British people are welcome and well bred. The time had run out and the sky was covered with clouds. It was raining. I was sitting near the window, drinking hot tea and looking at the rain.

My day in Oxford was excellent. And I will always remember it. In a few words studying in Britain can cost a lot of money and students need to work hard but the main thing to remember about being a student is that it`s also a lot of fun.

And I have some advices for students thinking of coming to study in Oxford University. My number one tip is get a warm jacket because it can get cold. And secondly know what you are looking for because lots of universities are very different. Finally, keep an open mind. Don`t be afraid to meet new people and have fun!
