The Hunger Games

Honorable judges of the contest, let me present you the plan of my presentation, concerning my favourite film “The Hunger Games”.

I have always liked to compare books and movies, shot on them, to look for distinctions and similarities, to watch the acting, emotions, and interpretation of the book, made by actors. For example, the book «The Picture of Dorian Gray» by Oscar Wilde and the movie «Dorian Gray», «20 Thousand Leagues under the Sea» by Jules Verne and «Captain Nemo», and others. That was why I could not but pay attention to «The Hunger Games» by Suzanne Collins and the movie of the same title, released in 2002.

Gary Ross, the director, excellently conveyed the plot of the book, the characters’ lives and feelings in his movie.

It is necessary to speak about the actors. Jennifer Lawrence who played Katniss's role coped up with the task perfectly. She is energetic. And it is interesting to look at her. Josh Hutcherson is lost against such a strong girl, although he is extremely charming. Woody Harrelson made a very strong impression on me. His character, Heymitch Eberneti, is a wise man who knows exactly, how to present oneself to the public, how to survive. He gives useful advice to Katniss and Peeta during the games; after all he is their mentor. He understands too much about this life and, probably, that’s why he becomes an inveterate drunkard. There are some more actors I’d like to mention. Elizabeth Banks and her screwball Effie and Stanley Tucci with his artistry also deserve being singled out. In general, all the young actors did their best. Well, it is time to pass on to the stuffing.

Now tell me, please, do you wish to get a good luck pill? No, no side effects will threaten you, and you will have no allergy. Only one pill in day before breakfast - and you will become the luckiest person in the world! No dirty tricks. All the best and only for you!

Unfortunately, such a pill wasn't offered to the main characters of the book and the movie «The Hunger Games» Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, therefore they had to rely only on the forces.

They were only teenagers, who had to resist to the deadly games created by Panem's government in the memory of the «suppression of revolt in the district 13». How silly it is to arrange such shows, especially if the essence of it is to kill people, people, put in a dreadful situation where they try to survive, find food, sell some things in the market or hunt, as Katniss and her best friend Gale! But it is not their fault, they are only pawns of the cruel game.

You, probably, remember the myth about Theseus and the Minotaur, which tells us about Athenians’ punishment for some faults in the past. They had to send each 9 years seven young men and seven girls to the Minotaur’s Labyrinth to the island of Crete, where the Minotaur ate them up.

In “The Hunger Games” there is no complicated labyrinth, no strange creatures wanting to eat you up, and no Ariadne's thread capable to show the right way out. There are 24 people, both female and male, and their age fluctuates from 12 to 18 years, from every district, whose names are written on small leaflets. Their fate is decided on the Day of the Harvest when these leaflets are extended as lottery tickets – you win, if the piece of paper does not have your name. You lose, if it does.

Katniss’ name wasn't chosen, but she participated, instead of her younger sister Primrose. The film excellently shows us, that she made the decision immediately, having forgotten about her own safety, her own life. She shot her way out of the crowd of people, cried out that she wished to take part instead of the girl. Of course, the inhabitants of District-12 were amazed – she was the first volunteer for many years! Here, on the scene, she and a young boy, who was also chosen, listened to the words, which would pursue them long enough: «And let good luck always be with you!».

During the time of saying goodbye to the family, before the departure to the Capitol, Madzh, the mayor’s daughter, unexpectedly came to visit Katniss. Madzh presented her with a brooch with a mockingjay, thus wishing her good luck. But this moment is shown differently in the movie. In the film Katniss saw the brooch in the market. The woman, who was selling them, gave the brooch with words «It is pleasant to you? Take». This makes an impression that the brooch is just some stuff, but not the most precious jewelry and even a symbol of revolt in the districts, as we learn from further parts of the movie. For me it wasn’t clear, as because of that book-movie inconsistence it is necessary to change some moments in further parts of the “Hunger Games”.

I can't tell how offended I was, when I didn't see how Haymitch fell from the stage! This moment was cut out from the movie, and for the first time we see Haymitch only in the train. Also, he always called Katniss “my sun” in the book, not “baby”. But maybe the translators are guilty. When the characters arrived to the Capitol, the moment with the dumb is also cut out. Though it was very important, as it showed how cruel laws in Panem were.

What is more, the director changed the episode, when Peeta was fatally wounded. They were in a cave with Katniss, he needed some medicine. And the organizers announced about a surprise. The players had to come to the horn of Amalthea to get the desired. Peeta didn't let Katniss go, worrying for her, but she waited till he fell asleep and left. In the book it was described in a different way. Haymitch sent special syrup to Katniss which was used to lull people. And Katniss had to pour this syrup into the soup and feed Peeta. I think that the episode should not have been changed, because in the film version it does not show Peeta’s feelings to Katniss. He was really in love with her, and he could not just wake up in the morning, understand where she was and wait for her. It is not true to life.

By the way, the film cut the scene off, where Katniss applied a tourniquet to Peeta, so that he did not bleed to death. Later, Peeta had his leg amputated and replaced by an artificial one. Perhaps, it was made simply for saving time.

Anyway, despite these inconsistencies I adore the movie. I was really overwhelmed by emotions having watched it. Gary Ross forced the audience, me in particular, to watch the film with an undivided attention. I was submerged into the movie, full of tremendous effects and intense situations.

Just think, that a bit of luck, and the nightlock that are so similar to bilberry, wouldn't have made inhabitants of the district think of a revolt. A bit of luck, and Katniss wouldn't have trifled with Peeta's feelings so that to survive. A bit of luck, and they wouldn't have seen that cruelty. A bit of luck, and they wouldn't have participated in the Hunger Games. But, if those events did not take place, the book would not have been written and made into such an amazing film!

It tells us that people, despite all the difficulties and misfortunes, are ready to battle further for their life; that they still have a huge strength of mind! It induces us to watch it again and again. The film, depicting cruelty and deaths, teaches us, that among all the evil and misfortune, there is still a place for happiness and pleasures, true feelings and loyal friendship. We realize that while there are heroes in the world, we have everything we can dream about. We are just to try and overcome some difficulties.

… And let the good luck always be with you!

Мне всегда нравилось сравнивать книгу и фильм, снятый по ней, искать различия и сходства, смотреть игру актеров, их эмоции, правильную их передачу. Например, книгу «Портрет Дориана Грея» Оскара Уайльда и фильм «Дориан Грей», «20 тысяч лье под водой» Жуля Верна и «Капитан Немо», а также многие другие. «Голодные Игры» Сьюзен Коллинз и одноименный фильм не остались без моего внимания.

Гэри Росс, режиссер, превосходно передал в своем фильме сюжет книги, историю героев, их чувства. Нельзя не отметить также самих актеров. Дженнифер Лоуренс, сыгравшая роль Китнисс, отлично справилась со своей задачей. Она такая живая. И на нее безумно интересно смотреть. Джош Хатчерсон теряется на фоне такой сильной девушки, хотя он обладает морем обаяния и просто выглядит очень приятным парнем, не лишенным способности играть. Вуди Харрельсон произвел на меня достаточно сильное впечатление. Его герой, Хеймитч Эбернети, является мудрым мужчиной, который знает, как именно себя предоставить публике, как выжить, дает полезные советы Китнисс и Питу во время игр. Он слишком многое понимает в этой жизни и, видимо, поэтому спивается. Очень ярки Элизабет Бэнкс, чья эксцентричная Эффи запоминается надолго, и Стенли Туччи с таким артистизмом. И в целом, все юные актеры хороши. Что ж, пора приступить к начинке.

Скажите, не желаете ли приобрести таблетку удачи? Нет, никаких побочных эффектов и, уж тем более, никакой аллергии у вас не будет. Всего лишь одна таблетка в день перед завтраком - и вы самый везучий человек в мире! Никакого подвоха. Все самое лучшее и только для вас!

К сожалению, такой таблетки не было предложено главным героям книги и фильма "ГИ" Китнисс Эвердин и Питу Мелларку, поэтому им пришлось полагаться лишь на свои силы.

Они всего лишь подростки, вынужденные противостоять смертельным играм, создаваемым правительством Панема, в память о "подавлении восстания в дистрикте 13". Как же глупо устраивать подобные зрелища, особенно если весь смысл заключается в убийствах себе подобных, таких же людей, поставленных в тяжелое положение, которые пытаются выжить, хоть как-то найти себе еду, занимаясь, к примеру, работой на рынке, продавая какие-то вещички, или охотой, как Китнисс и ее лучший друг Гейл! Но это не их вина, они лишь пешки в этой жестокой игре.

Вы, наверное, помните миф о Тессее и Минотавре, повествующий о том, как в наказание за определенные провинности в прошлом афиняне каждые 9 лет должны были посылать на остров Крит семь юношей и семь девушек, где их запирали в Лабиринте, обрекая на съедение Минотавру. Только здесь нет ни лабиринтов, из которых нельзя найти выход, ни странных существ, для которых человек является пищей, ни нити Ариадны, способной показать верный путь. Есть 24 человека, представители женского и мужского пола, возраст которых колеблется от 12 до 18 лет, с каждого дистрикта, чьи имена написаны на листочках, судьбы которых решаются в День Жатвы, когда этот листочек вытягивают как лотерейный билет - выиграл, если не назвали, проиграл, если прозвучало имя.

Имя Китнисс названо не было, но она сама вызвалась на игры, вместо своей младшей сестры Примроуз. Из кадров фильма видно, что решение она это приняла незамедлительно, забыв о своей безопасности. Она резко вырвалась из толпы стоящих людей и несколько человек охраны, выкрикнув, что желает выйти вместо девочки. Конечно же, Китнисс тут же поймала на себе удивленные взгляды жителей Дистрикта-12. Ну, еще бы! первый доброволец за долгие годы! Здесь, на сцене, она впервые услышит слова, которые будут обращены именно к ней и парню, ее ровеснику, чье имя назвали. Слова, которые будут преследовать их еще достаточно долго: "И пусть удача всегда будет с вами!".

В момент прощания с семьей, перед отъездом в Капитолий, к Китнисс пришла - неожиданно для нее самой - Мадж, дочь мэра дистрикта-12, которому она частенько приносила ягоды из леса. Мадж подарила ей брошь с сойкой-пересмешницей. На удачу. Но в фильме этот момент показан иначе. Все было сделано так, что Китнисс увидала эту брошь у одной женщины на рынке и, т.к. та заметила, что она понравилась девушке, со словами "Нравится? Бери" отдала брошь. Производит впечатление, что эта брошь является каким-то хламом, а не самой настоящей драгоценностью и даже символом восстания в дистриктах, как мы узнаем из дальнейших частей фильма. Это мне было действительно непонятно, ведь в дальнейших частях фильма «ГИ» придется изменять некоторые моменты, хотя можно было оставить все, как есть на самом деле.

Не могу сказать, как я была обижена, когда не увидела, как со сцены упал Хейтмич! Этот момент вырезали из фильма, и Хеймитча первый раз мы увидели лишь в поезде. Так же, он всегда называл Китнисс солнышком, а не деткой. Но это, видимо, виноваты переводчики. Когда все уже прибыли в Капитолий, вырезали момент с безгласой. Хотя он был очень важен тем, что давал знать, какие жестокие законы в Панеме.

Ну и, конечно, то, что возмутило меня больше всего. Когда Пит был смертельно ранен, и он с Китнисс был в пещере, ему нужно было лекарство. И тут объявляют о сюрпризе, но для этого нужно было прийти к Рогу Изобилия для получения желаемого. Пит не отпускал Китнисс, волновался за нее, но она все равно пошла после того, как он уснул. В книге же было иначе. Хейтмич отправил Китнисс специальный сироп, который используют, чтобы усыплять людей. И Китнисс должна была этот сироп налить в суп, а потом накормить Пита, чтобы спокойно уйти. Но в фильме этого не было. Что ж, действительно, зачем, если он все равно уснул? А то, что он проснется утром, и вряд ли будет просто сидеть спокойно ждать ее, ничего не значит, даже если он ее сильно любит! Вот тут немного не додумали сценаристы.

Кстати, странно было то, что в фильме умалчивается о том, что Китнисс накладывает Питу жгут на ногу, чтобы тот выжил и не истек кровью, из-за чего позже Питу ампутируют часть ноги и заменят ее искусственной. Возможно, это сделали просто для экономии времени.

Так или иначе, фильм мне действительно очень понравился, не смотря на эти недостатки. Но их всех компенсировали мои эмоции после просмотра. Гэри Росс заставил своих зрителей, в частности меня, смотреть, не отрываясь от экрана, этот фильм, полный потрясающих эффектов и напряжённой обстановки на протяжении всей киноленты.

Немного удачи, и ягоды морник, что так похожи на чернику, не побудили бы думать жителей дистриктов о восстании, что в дальнейшем доставило огромных проблем героям. Немного удачи, и Китнисс не пришлось бы играть чувствами Пита, чтобы выжить. Немного удачи, и они бы не видели эту жестокость. Немного удачи, и им бы не пришлось участвовать в Голодных играх. Но тогда не было бы написано этой книги вовсе, не было бы снято этого фильма! Он рассказывает нам о том, что человек, не смотря на все трудности и несчастья, готов дальше сражаться за свою жизнь, что у него по-прежнему внутри огромная сила духа! Именно это побуждает смотреть его снова и снова. Смотреть, что в этом огромном и жестоком мире есть место счастью и радостям, настоящим чувствам и верным друзьям! Что в мире, в котором живут герои, есть все, о чем можно мечтать, стоит лишь преодолеть преграды.
…И пусть удача всегда будет с Вами!
