Coast
The east coast of О. is fringed by rocks and shoals, many of which are awash; the coastal bank, with depths of less than 6 fathoms over it, extends from one to 21/2 miles from the shore. The soundings are а useful indication of the distanceе from the coast in thick weather, as they decrease gradua1ly from seaward, except off the extreme northern end of the island. The land is very low, and in thick weather appears to be at а greater distance than it actually is.
