Form the internet research I am able to conclude that declining biodiversity is a real problem and that there will be many consequences for the world and human beings if nothing is done to slow down or reverse the decline. The United Nations says that there may be a problem feeding people in the future and that some medicines will not be available due to the impact of deforestation and a reduction in genetic diversity. There are other problems caused and I think that there should be a lot done to solve the problem by individuals and countries as well.

However there is not enough awareness of the problem amongst many people and as a result they don’t really want to do anything about the issue at a personal level. The questionnaire results support this conclusion. People tend to ignore the problem or believe that it is someone else’s responsibility. There is more evidence for this in the results of the unstructured interviews.

As a result of this research I can conclude that more needs to be done to raise awareness about the issue of declining biodiversity. Maybe this can be done through education of children in schools and by governments through publicity campaigns. Subjects like Global Perspectives can help raise awareness; so can having environmental clubs in schools so that children can learn about the issues.

However I really believe from this research that this must happen but it will not be enough. In the research people said that governments must act to encourage or even force people to ‘do the right thing’ for the environment. The laws must change to ensure more waste is recycled by more people, for example. Also in my opinion the government must introduce regulations to control pollution and protect areas that contain rich biodiversity.
