One of the obvious areas for further research is into the effect of family ties and the influence of other members of the family on the motivation and meaning attached to migration. This was an unexpected finding and should be explored further, particularly as it was not mentioned very much in the background research. These personal aspects of change in people’s lives should be understood more fully in research explanations.
Another area of further research should be into the realities of migration – did the experience in practice live up to expectation? Was the ‘dream of a better life’ fulfilled? Part of the data from the unstructured interviews related to this and could be used as a starting point or pilot study for the future.
The United Nations statistics suggest that more men migrate than women and for different reasons. The reasons for these differences could also be studied.
The research confirmed my own perspective and experience on the issue. People in life usually want to improve themselves, care for their families and give their children a better future. That is why my family moved. However I have learnt that existing family relationships are a real influence on the choice of destination and the process of migration. This will shape my understanding of the issue in the future. In addition the influence of environmental factors was surprising and may be due to local circumstances in my country or growing awareness globally of the benefits of living in attractive, clean and healthy environments. As a result, this is something that I want to explore further for myself.
