Part I

Microsoft, inc.is a multinational company that develops a wide range of software products. The most profitable products are the Microsoft Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office suite of productivity software. The company was founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Microsoft rose to dominate the home computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the mid-1980's, followed by the Windows line of operating systems. Windows is still the flagship product of the company, the current desktop version is Windows 7, released in 2009. The company now has three business divisions: the Microsoft Platform Products and Services Division, the Microsoft Business Division and the Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division. Headquartered in Redmond, Washington, Microsoft has been the largest software company in the world for at least 8 years in a row.

IBM is a multinational computer, technology and IT-consulting company, headquartered in Armonk, New York. The company which later became IBM, was founded in 1896 by Herman Hollerith. IBM produces hardware and software, and offers services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology. IBM is the largest IT services company and the second largest software company in the world. In 2009, the company has received the most US patents for the 17th consecutive year. The main software products of IBM are Webspere, DB2, Lotus, Tivoli and Cognos.

Oracle is a multinational computer-technology corporation that develops enterprise software products and particularly database management systems. Headquartered in Redwood City, California, United States, Oracle employs more than 73,201 people worldwide as of 2009. It has enlarged its share of the software market through organic growth and through a number of high-profile acquisitions, including PeopleSoft and BEA Systems. The company is the third-largest software company in both the US and the world. Oracle is also the second largest enterprise software company in the world.

SAP AG is a multinational software development and consulting corporation which provides enterprise software applications to businesses of all sizes. SAP was founded in 1972 in Mannheim by five former IBM engineers (Dietmar Hopp, Hans-Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, Claus E. Tschira, and Claus Wellenreuther). The company's best known product is SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). Headquartered in Walldorf Germany, SAP is the largest European software company and the largest enterprise software company in the world.

Ericsson was founded in 1876 by Lars Magnus Ericsson as a telegraph equipment repair shop. Nowadays, Ericsson is a Swedish provider of telecommunication and data communication systems, including mobile networks. Headquartered in Kista, Stockholm Municipality, Ericsson has offices and operations in more than 175 countries. In Sweden, Ericsson has more than 75,000 employees, making it one of the largest companies of the country. Ericsson is the worldwide market leader in telco networks, a business in which software revenues make up around 25% of total revenues. Ericsson is the fifth largest software company in the world.
