3. Match Passive sentences 1-3 with Active sentences a-c and circle the correct answer in the grammar rule.

1 - c; 2 - a; 3 - b;

We use the Passive when we are more interested in the action than the person who does it.

 

4. Look at the underlined verbs in sentences 1-3 in Exercise and complete the rules with the words in the box.

We form:

· The Present Simple Passive with am/is/are and the Past Participle.

· The Past Simple Passive with was/were and the Past Participle.

· The Present Perfect Passive with has been/have been and the Past Participle.

5. Find more examples of the Passive in the quiz. What tense are they?

 

6. In pairs, complete extracts a-f with the correct passive form of the verbs in brackets. Then match them with the newspaper sections below.

a - 1 are killed; 2 were killed;

b - 3 has been broken;

c - 4 has been bound; 5 was discovered;

d - 6 is not asked;

e - 7 are photographed;

f - 8 have been killed.

7. In pairs look at the words and phrases in Exercise 6 and answer the questions.

1 First of all, I read in the newspaper section on international news and science
2 I never read in the newspaper gossip column sections and reader’s letter’s because they are not interesting to me.

 

8. Complete each sentence using the Passive so that it means the same as the sentence above it.

2 In 1965 two computers were connected by telephone across the USA.

3 Email was invented by Ray Tomlinson in 1972.

4 The exact number of websites is unknown.

5 At least eight billion web pages have been counted by search engines.

6 Today the Internet is used by over a billion people.
