Smart Phone Lab

Before lab: Download AndroSensor

Every smartphone phone has a 3-axis accelerometer built into it. This allows the device to know if you rotate the device, play various games, and to sense acceleration due to changes in speed and/or direction. This lab will allow us to get “smart” about circular motion using your phone and whichever apps you can download that will work well.

Get to know acceleration in 3 directions:

1. Place phone on a level table, and record the acceleration along each x, y, and z axis:

ax=, ay=, az=

3. You should have measured zero for all 3 accelerations so if not remember to subtract your readings the offsets.

Which axis tells you the vertical direction? (try shaking vertically and see which changes)

4. Spin your phone on the table and see if your z- acceleration stays constant or try to graph it. If you see large changes or curvy graphs, does that mean you are spinning in a horizontal flat or wobbly off-kilter circle?.
