The doctrine of Expressionism provided a great impetus for experimentation in the field of art. One of the central tenets this doctrine was that mattered in art was not the imitation of nature but the expression of feelings through the choice of colours & lines; this naturally led the idea that art might be made more pure by doing with all subject matter & by relying exclusively the effects of tones & shapes. And it was the example of music, which gets on so well the crutch of words, had suggested to artists & critics the dream of a pure visual music.
However, it was thing to talk about such possibilities in general terms & quite to actually exhibit a painting without any immediately recognizable object. It appears the first artist to do this was the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). He was essentially a mystic dislike of the values of progress & science him long for a regeneration the world through a new art of pure ‘inwardness’.
In his confused & passionate book Concerning the Spiritual in Art, he stressed the psychological effects of pure colour, the in which a bright red can affect us the call of a trumpet. His conviction that was possible & necessary to bring about in this way a communion from mind to mind him the courage to exhibit these first attemps colour music in paintings such as Cossacks, which eally inaugurated what to be known as abstract art.
