Major genres of English broadcast news media list a reader, a voice-over, a report, a commen t, a talk and a press review. A news programme can include live or recorded interviews by field reporters, expert opinions, opinion poll results, and occasional editorial content.

The basic broadcast story forms (called otherwise genres) are a reader (“the tell”), “the voice over” (VO) and “the package” (“the wrap”).

A reader story / a reader (информационная заметка) is a story without accompanying video or sound usually presented by the newscaster (an anchor) in the studio.

A voice-over (видеозаметка) is a television term for a story told or narrated by the anchor while the video is playing.

The reader and VO are usually less than a minute, sometimes only 10 or 15 seconds long.

A complete story by a reporter is called a wrap in radio and a package (also known as a report) in television news parlance. It consists of a “lead-in,” or introduction («подводка») to be read by the newscaster, to be followed by the reporter’s narration, and often includes sound bites (интервью-составная часть репортажа) and natural sound – sound that occurs naturally on location. The video of the package may include graphics, either static or animated.

A package can be presented live or recorded in advance, it tends to run longer than the other story forms, sometimes up to three minutes, depending on the format of the newscast.

Sound on tape (SOT) is sound and/ or video, usually recorded in the field. It is usually an interview or "soundbite".

A comment or expert opinion (комментарий) explains or comments on an actual event by means of argumentation and generalization. In its original format it exists only on the radio, whilst similar television genre is but part of the interview or live reporting (прямое включение с места события).

A talk is the exchange of opinions with communicants being of equal communicative status. The genre is further transformed into the discussion which is held in the question-answer session

An extended press review (расширенный обзор прессы) runs for 15-25 minutes. A journalist (journalists) is invited to the news studio to comment and voice his opinion on front pages of tomorrow’s (today’s) Britain’s papers and facts features by them.

A press conference and a statement (заявление) are an integral part of live reporting and are not accompanied by news presenter’s comments.

Fragments of a press-conference, a statement or a parliamentary debate could be featured in a video brief news, a report or a comment.
