We live in the republic of Ukraine, which is the member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Ukraine is a sovereign state. It has its own territory, higher and local bodies of state power (the Supreme Rada, the local Soviets) government, national emblem, state flag and anthem.

The independence of Ukraine was proclaimed on the 24-th of August 1991. All the countries of the world now recognize its sovereignty. Ukraine has its own state symbols: Constitution, currency and government. According to the Constitution of Ukraine its territory is one and indivisible. There are 24 administrative districts and the Crimean autonomous republic in Ukraine. Only the laws of Ukraine act on its territory. The power in the country is divided into legislative, executive and judiciary. The main legislative body of Ukraine is Verkhovna Rada which consists of 450 deputies. The elections to Verkhovna Rada are held every 4 years on the last week of March. The deputies are elected by equal, secret or direct ballot. The executive power belongs to the government, headed by the prime-minister. The Council of Ministers coordinates the day-to-day administration of the government and may introduce legislation to Verkhovna Rada. The President represents the state in the international relations. He can veto any decision of Verkhovna Rada. The President has the power to sign passed legislation to take immediate effect. The President is also the commander-in-chief of all armed forces of Ukraine. The judiciary power belongs to the Constitutional court and regional courts. The state symbols of Ukraine are the national flag and emblem. They root deeply in ancient times and have symbolic meaning. Azure-yellow state flag symbolized the unity of blue sky and yellow wheat field. The symbol (the little state emblem) - trident - appeared first on the seals in times of Vladimir the Great.

There are different nationalities in Ukraine: Ukrainians (73, 6 %), Russians (21, 1 %), Jews (1, 3 %), Byelorussians (0, 8 %), Moldavians (0, 6 %), Polish and Bulgarians (0, 5 %), and other nations and nationalities.

The name of Ukraine is first mentioned in the Kiev chronicles of 1187.

Ukraine as an Independent country was proclaimed in Kharkiv on December 25, 1917 when Soviet power was established.

July 16th is now a state holiday-declared sovereignty.

Constitution of Ukraine

Ukraine is a democratic legal state. The form of governing is presidential republic. The state system of Ukraine is determined by the following documents:(the Declaration on State Sovereignty adopted on the 16th of July 1990, The Act on Independence (24 August 1991), The Law on Power 1991 and the Constitution adopted in 1996 with a great number of changes and additions. The head of the state is president, elected by general voting for the term of 4 years. The legislative power is carried out by the Parliament or Supreme Council, which consists of 450 members, elected for 4 years as well. The government or the Cabinet of Ministers carries out executive power and Force Ministers are appointed in concordance with the Supreme Council.

Juridical power is performed by the system of courts; the highest of them is the Supreme Court. All civil and criminal cases are considered and decided by judge alone, except those, which involve capital punishment. In these cases a jury of 6 members is appointed.

Interpreting the constitution and solving contradictions between different branches of power cover the term of reference of the Constitutional Court, members of which are appointed for life, one half of them by president, the other - by Parliament.
