The best place for tourist information or possibly a map of town should be from your hotel concierge. For competent English-language help, call the Shanghai Call Centre ( 962 288), a free 24-hour English-language hotline that can respond to cultural, entertainment or transport enquiries (even providing directions for your cab driver).
Shanghai has about a dozen or so rather useless Tourist Information and Service Centres (Lǚyou Zixun Fuwu Zhongxin) where you can at least get free maps and (sometimes) information. Branches:
The Bund Beneath the Bund promenade, opposite the intersection with East Nanjing Rd.
The Bund (; 6357 3718; 518 Jiujiang Rd; 518 9.30am-8pm; East Nanjing Rd)
French Concession (; 5386 1882; 138 South Chengdu Rd, just off Middle Huaihai Rd; 138 9am-8.30pm)
Huangpu (; 6357 3718; 518 Jiujiang Rd; 518 9.30am-8pm)
Jing’an (; 6248 3259; Lane 1678, 18 West Nanjing Rd; 1678 18 9am-5pm)
Pudong (; 3878 0202; 1st fl, Superbrand Mall, 168 Lujiazui Rd; 168 1 9am-6pm)
Old Town (; 6355 5032; 149 Jiujiaochang Rd; 149 9am-7pm) Southwest of Yuyuan Gardens.
There is also the useful Shanghai Information Centre for International Visitors (; 6384 9366; Xintiandi South Block, Bldg 2, Xingye Rd; 10am-10pm).
The tourist hotline ( 962 020) offers a limited English-language service.
