(Xìqu Bówùguan; 14 Zhongzhangjia Xiang; 14 8.30am-4.30pm) In among the delightful cobblestone, canal-side alleyways in the east of town is the pretty Kūnqu Opera Museum, housing a beautiful old stage, musical instruments, costumes and photos. It also stages performances of kūnqu at 2pm on Sundays.
Píngtán Museum Museum
Offline map Google map (Píngtán Bówùguan; 3 Zhongzhangjia Xiang; 3 admission ¥4) Right before the Kūnqu Opera Museum is the Píngtán Museum where performances of píngťan (a Sūzhōu-dialect singing and story-telling art form) are held daily from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
Píngjiāng Lù Street
Offline map Google map () This lovely stretch of canal-side road (Píngjiāng was the old name for Sūzhōu) on the eastern side of town is brimful of historic charm, with attractive whitewashed architecture, bridges, cafes, teahouses and hostels. The surrounding streets are excellent for slow exploration.
Temple of Mystery Taoist Temple
Offline map Google map (Xuánmiào Guān; Guanqian Jie; admission ¥10; 7.30am-5.15pm) At the heart of what was once Sūzhōu Bazaar, the Taoist Temple of Mystery was originally laid out between AD 275 and 279, with many later additions. Its enormous Three Purities Hall (Sānqīng Diàn), supported by 60 pillars and capped by a double roof with upturned eaves, dates from 1181, and is the only surviving example of Song-era architecture in Sūzhōu.
