(Ding Tai Feng; 5th fl, Grand Gateway 66; 5 ; Xujiahui) This capacious, brightly lit and busy Taiwan-owned restaurant chain may still be peddling its ‘Top 10 restaurants of the world’ mantra after a two-decades-old review in the New York Times, but it still delivers some absolutely scrummy Shanghai xiaolongbao dumplings. Not cheap perhaps (five for Y29, or 10 for Y58), but they’re worth every jiao. The mildly tangy hot and sour soup with pork and bean curd (Y35) is a great companion dish, or go for the lovely braised ox brisket soup with vegetables (Y50). Service is top-notch and you can watch the chefs prepare your dumplings through sheet glass on arrival. Further branches include the Old Town, Xintiandi and the SWFC and Superbrand Mall (both in Pudong).

Shanghai’s Christians

Christianity is the fastest-growing faith in China, and Shanghai alone has at least 140,000 Catholics, largely due to its history of Jesuit communities. St Ignatius Cathedral is the largest church in the city proper but Sheshan Basilica, in the suburbs, is even larger. Relations between the government and the Chinese Catholic Church are uneasy, as the Church refuses to disown the Pope as its leader. Nor does China’s one-child policy sit well with the Catholic stand on abortion. For this reason, the Vatican maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan, much to China’s consternation.

To see or take part in prayer, Catholics can visit the Christ the King Church (Junwang Tianzhutang;; cnr Julu & Maoming Rds), St Ignatius Cathedral or the splendid Catholic Church in Qibao. Protestants can visit the lively Community Church (; 53 Hengshan Rd), near South Wulumuqi Rd, with Sunday school for children and a small nursery for toddlers. There is also a growing flock of modern, newly built churches throughout Shanghai, including in Pudong.
