The magnificent St Ignatius Catholic Library, the Bibliotheca Zi-Ka-Wei Offline map Google map (Xujiahui Cangshulou;; 6487 4095, ext 208; 80 North Caoxi Rd; 80 library tour 2-4pm Sat; Xujiahui) is one of several Jesuit monuments defining historic Xujiahui. Established in 1847 by the local Jesuit mission and home to 560,000 volumes in Greek, Latin and other languages, the edifice consists of two buildings, with the library itself housed in the lower, two-storey, east-facing building that partially arches over the pavement.
The only way to see its priceless book collection is on a free guided tour of the highlight main library (Da Shufang) on Saturday afternoons. English-speaking guides take you through an astonishing collection of antiquarian tomes, arranged in a beautiful historic library laid out on one floor with a gallery above. Wander past rare books on ecclesiastical history, Philosphica, Res Sinenses (Things Chinese) and other erudite branches of Jesuit learning. The 15-minute tours are limited to 10 people per group, so it’s best to phone ahead to book. Photography is not allowed. Adjacent to the magnificent library to the south is the Priest’s Residence.
