Vision Statement Creation

When writing a vision statement, your mission statement and your core competencies can be a valuable starting point for articulating your values. Be sure when you’re creating one not to fall into the trap of only thinking ahead a year or two. The best vision statements describe outcomes that are five to ten years away, although some look even further out. Once you have one, your vision statement will have a huge influence on decision making and the way you allocate resources.

Vision statements:

Ø are idealistic and remain accurate for 10+ years;

Ø explicitly state the aspirations of the people in the organization for furthering a higher purpose beyond just the organization’s survival;

Ø identify the impacts of the organization’s work on the world at large;

Ø are unique and authentic to the organization;

Ø “feel right” to the point where employees and stakeholders can internalize it and explain it with conviction and enthusiasm in their own words.

Example

Using the example mission statement developed for Farm Fresh Produce, the owner examines what she, her customers and her employees value about her mission.

The four most important things she identifies are: freshness, healthiness, tastiness and “local-ness” of the produce.

Here’s the Vision Statement she creates and shares with employees, customers and farmers alike:

“We help the families of Main Town live happier and healthier lives by providing the freshest, tastiest and most nutritious local produce: From local farms to your table in under 24 hours.”
