An academic subject is an area of knowledge which is studied in school, college or university. As academic subjects students may study social, natural, and exact sciences. Social sciences include, for example, history, political science, economics, and sociology. History is the branch of knowledge that deals systematically with a recording, analyzing, and explaining of past events. Political science is the study of how people obtain or compete for power and how it is used in governing a country. Economics is the science that deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of wealth, and with the various related problems of labor, finance, or taxation. Sociology is the scientific study of the nature and development of society and social behaviour. Natural sciences include chemistry, biology and physics. Chemistry is the scientific study of the structure of substances, how they react when combined or in contact with one another, and how they behave under different conditions. Biology is the scientific study of the life and structure of plants and animals. Physics is the scientific study of forces such as light, heat, sound, and movement, of relationships between them, and how they affect physical objects. Exact sciences are based upon mathematics. Mathematics includes arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Arithmetic is the type of mathematics that deals with the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of numbers. Algebra is a part of mathematics in which letters and symbols are used to represent numbers. Geometry is the branch of mathematics relating to the study ofspace and the relationships between points, lines, curves and surfaces. Trigonometry is the type of mathematics that deals with the relationship between the sides and angles of triangles.
