At most British universities the academic year starts in October and is divided into three term s: the Autumn term, the Spring term, and the Summer term. British universities provide their students with short holidays at Christmas and in the spring and a long summer holidays. Students study a main subject throughout their degree course, which is usually a mix of compulsory course s and optional course s, often called electives. Most students go to lecture s and seminar s (= discussion groups) and there are practicals for those doing science subjects. Most students in Britain have to pay towards their tuition fees and can get student loan s towards their living expenses. The US academic year may be divided into two semester s of about 15 weeks and runs from August or September to May or June. Students take courses in a variety of subjects, regardless of their main subject, as part of a liberal artscurriculum. At the end of their second year students choose a major (= main subject) and sometimes a minor (= additional subject) which they study for the next two years. Students take their courses in the form of lectures, discussion sections, or lab sessions. There are many private colleges and universities in the US but most students choose a public institution because the costs are lower. All universities charge tuition, and students pay extra for room and board. Students whose families cannot afford the full amount apply for financial aid. It may be a combination of grants from the government, a scholarship, a student loan, and a work-study program.
