Vocabulary

academic degree - ученая степень;

To get a degree in Britain, students have to hear either an honours course or a basic course. An honours course is a university course that is of a higher level than a basic course. An honours course generally takes three years and ends with exams called finals. Finals let British students have an honours degree which is awarded in the first, second, or third classes. The highest class is a first, for example, a First Class Honours degree. Most students get a second which is often divided into upper second, also called a 2.1, and lower second, called a 2.2, and below that is a third. If students do not meet the standard for an honours degree they may be awarded a pass degree. Graduates can add the letters BA or BSc after their name. Some graduates go on to study for a further degree, that is, a master's degree (MA) or a doctorate (PhD). To get a degree in the US, students have to go to either colleges granting a bachelor's degree after a four-year course or to colleges granting an associate degree after a two-year course. Colleges with a two-year course are divided into junior colleges and community colleges. Junior colleges as well as community colleges provide their students either with the first two years of a standard four-year college program or with a complete career-training program resulting in a certificate or an associate degree. Unlike junior colleges, community colleges were established to serve a certain community and are sometimes supported in part by it. Universities in the US offer courses not only for undergraduate students studying for a bachelor's degree, but also for graduate students who study in graduate school. A graduate school is a part of a college or university forstudies after the first degree. Students must do well in the Graduate Record Examination to be accepted into graduate school. The GRE is a standard examination taken to enter an American graduate school. Graduate school students study for a master’s or a doctorate degree.
