Exposed location single-buoy

Mooring (ELSBM)

a floating chamber anchored near a production

platform in order to serve as a

flexible connection to a tanker taking on

oil from the platform, such a system has

no storage capacity Also known as a single-

buoy mooring (SBM) and single-point

mooring (SPM)

Boiling Point

the temperature of a liquid at which its

vapor pressure equals the external pressure

Boiling liquids are normally quoted

for standard atmospheric pressure At a

fixed pressure, a liquid will not exceed its

boiling point and further heating merely

converts more liquid to vapor

Dew point

the temperature at which air is saturated

with water and dew begins to form

Tertiary era

the era of geological time which began

roughly 60 million years ago and ended

roughly one million years ago, it is in

lower Tertiary formations that many oil

fields have been found in the North Sea

Triassic period

the period of geological time which

began roughly 230 million years ago and

ended roughly 180 million years ago

Methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE)

a lead-free, anti-knock compound added

to petrol

Tongs

hydraulically operated grabs used to

hold sections of pipe during screwing

or unscrewing, sometimes known as

pipe tongs

Pipeline

a pipe for pumping fluids

Mist

airborne particles of a liquid which have

condensed on dust particles

Turbine

a piece of equipment in which a shaft is

steadily rotated by the impact of a current

of steam, air, water, or other fluid

directed from |ets or nozzles upon blades

of a wheel

Heavy fractions, or heavy ends

the high-molecular-weight, high-boilingpoint

fractions that emerge from the lower

part of a fractionating column during the

oil refining process

Hydrocarbons

compounds containing only the elements

hydrogen and carbon They may exist as

solids, liquids or gases

Tubine drilling

drilling in which the drill string remains

stationary, the bit being rotated by a

down-hole multi-stage turbine powered

by the drilling mud

Turbodrill

the down-hole drilling mechanism used in

turbine drilling

Heavy crude

crude oil with a high specific gravity

and a low API gravity due to the presence

of a high proportion of heavy hydrocarbon

fractions

Hydrocarbon aerosol propellanl

a hydrocarbon used in aerosol sprays to

drive out and atomize the contents - usually

high-purity isobutane plus a small

amount of propane

Carbon

a basic element, occurs in several forms,

e g diamonds (white, crystaline),

graphite (soft, flaky, greasy), coke, charcoal

(black, hard, solid) Carbon is the

base of all hydrocarbons, and is capable

of combining with hydrogen in almost any

proportion, resulting in almost numberless

hydrocarbon compounds

Dip

a measure of the inclination of rock strata

with respect to the horizontal

Coal

a solid fossil fuel consisting mainly of carbon

produced by the compression of

decayed plants
