Types of essays

Introduction

An essay is a sustained piece of prose in which the author attempts to set down significant ideas, describe experiences, convey information, analyze issues, or set forth a proposition. The word “essay” (the French origin) originally meant a first attempt or practice, which perhaps suggests some kind of provisional exploration. Essays are an intellectual exploration of a topic, involving looking at different arguments and evidence and developing the writer’s perspective.

The purpose of writing an essay is to provide written evidence of person’s ability to:

· research a topic;

· weigh arguments;

· organise his/her thoughts;

· express these thoughts in a logical, coherent and critical manner;

· reach conclusions which follow from the evidence and the arguments the author puts forward.

Essay writing helps:

· To think outside the box. An essay challenges your awareness of the world and invites you to learn about new things, entertain alternative viewpoints, and explore differences and similarities you might previously have taken for granted.

· To develop research skills. To write a solid essay, you not only need to know where to go for information, be it a library, a website or a human expert, but also how to interpret the material and identify which portions of it are relevant to the thesis you're advancing.

· To managing your time. Essay writing teaches you how to create time lines and deadlines for collecting research, organizing notes and doing the actual writing.

· To develop writing skills. Composing an essay requires you to not only get your points and opinions across in a creative, clear and concise way but also to pay sharp attention to spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, syntax and structure.

· To hone analytical skills. Essays are an exercise in assessing data, making informed choices and defending conclusions, all of which are used on a daily basis in the business world. In addition, essays often explore hypothetical scenarios that encourage creative thinking and problem solving.

· To demonstrating knowledge. An essay reflects how well you know the subject matter as well as how passionate you are about persuading readers to accept, or at least respect, your unique point of view.

TYPES OF ESSAYS

There are many different types of essays. Students may find some of these hard to comprehend and difficult to implement. Fortunately, essays can be categorized into four main groups. Knowing the different types of essays can help writers decide upon the most appropriate type for the topic and help organize the structure of the essay.
