VI. E. Read the text AUSTRALIA (II) and discuss it (English Speaking world)
An island continent, Australia was cut off from the rest of the world for millions of years. As a result, it was the last continent to be discovered and settled by Europeans.
Australia is the driest continent on earth. The four great deserts of central Australia cover 2,000,000 square kilometres. There are few rivers there. Coastline of South Australia has some beautiful beaches with cliffs shaped by the wind and waves.
Australia is the flattest of all continents. Its most significant mountain chain is the Great Dividing Range running down most of the east coast.
Many species of its animals and plants are ancient and unique. Many of them are found nowhere else in the world, they are endemic. There live kangaroos, koalas, echidnas and a lot of rare birds: emu, black swan, parrots, etc.
However, Australia is the most urbanized country in the world. Two out of three of its citizens live in the eight largest cities.

VI. F. Read the text Canberra and then discuss it (from Easy English № 40)
Canberra is the capital of Australia. It is located in the southeast, on the Molonglo River. It was chosen as the capital in 1909 and since that time it has developed enormously. Canberra is both the seat of Australian government and a beautiful city well worth seeing.
Canberra is divided by Lake Burley Griffin – an artificial lake with two large bridges. The main point in the city is Capital Hall, from which all the main avenues go and around which are the main official buildings. The interesting places are Yarralumla House – the residence of the governor-general, the Australian National University, and the National Library. One of the most characteristic points is the Australian American Memorial, built to express the gratitude of Australian people to the American people for their help during World War II.
Notes: governor-general генерал-губернатор
