At the Institute of History and Philosophy

I am a first-year student at Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University аt Cherkasy (a freshman, as they put it in America) and I major in philosophy. It was shortly before leaving school that I made up my mind to enter this school, and took up philosophy seriously as my future vocation. So, I was admitted to the University to study at the day department.

The history of our School began in 1994 from the historical department which was founded on the basis of the School of Philology. It was only in September 2009 that the School was transformed into the Institute of History and Philosophy. The faculty do their best to combine general education of their students with the development of scientific research. Today 60 lecturers and tutors (ten have Doctoral Degrees and forty-five have Candidate of Philosophy and History degrees) work at 5 specialized chairs (the Chair of Ukrainian History and Ethnology, the Chair of World History, the Chair of Contemporary History, the Chair of Historiography and the Chair of Philosophy). Many highly-qualified specialists from all-university chairs teach here as well. There are nearly 400 students in our Institute.

There are many philosophical subjects in our curriculum. We also study Latin, Old Slavonic, English, German or French. When we are through with Hellenistic and Roman Philosophy, Logic, we shall pass on to the study of the Medieval and Modern Philosophy. During my seniour year I would like to devote myself to the special study of Evolutionary Philosophy which is of great interest to me.

During our studies we are to attend all the lectures, seminars and tutorials. Each year we must present a course project to our scientific adviser and make reports on philosophical themes in class. At the end of each term we take several exams and credit-tests.

If you ask me why of all the Humanities I have chosen philosophy, my answer will be: philosophy is not only a science about the general laws of the development of nature, society and consciousness: it is a way of looking at the world by a dialectical method. Thus, philosophy is a very broad discipline, and knowledge of philosophy helps one understand the world better; understand its laws and-one's interpersonal relations. Moreover, it helps one penetrate into the depths of human mind.
