THERAPY
Topic text 1
If seriously ill or in need of any specific examination patients receive the direction from the polyclinic to be hospitalized. When they are admitted to the hospital first of all they are received by a nurse on duty at the reception ward. She records their name, age, place of employment, occupation, address and the initial diagnosis made by the district doctor. Then a doctor on duty examines the hospitalized patients and gives his instructions what departments and wards the patients are to be admitted to.
As soon as the patient is admitted to the in-patient department the ward doctor fills in the patient’s case history. It must include the information about the patient’s parents – if they are alive or not. The doctor must know if any of the family has ever been ill with tuberculosis or has had any mental or emotional impairments.
The patient’s medical history must include the information about the diseases which the patient had, about the operations which were performed and any traumas he had. The patient’s blood group and the sensitivity to antibiotics must be determined and the obtained information written down in the case history. The attending doctor must know patient’s complaints and symptoms and the time of their appearance and duration.
At the in-patient departments of a hospital life begins early in the morning. The nurses on duty take patients’ temperatures, give them intramuscular and intravenous injections, take blood pressure, take some blood, urine and gastric juice for tests, apply cups and give all the prescribed remedies (medicines) in the doses indicated by the ward doctor.
