New York City

New York is called "The Big Apple". Everyone wants to bite it.

What is so special about New York? Is it the Empire State Building? The Statue of Liberty? Madison Avenue? Broadway? Greenwich Village?

New York is all this and a little bit more. Some people love it, some hate it. It is the city of contrasts. It can be beautiful and it can be ugly. It can be friendly and it can be rude. It can be good and it can be bad. But it is never boring. It is the most exciting city in the world! There is a saying: "If you can't do it in New York, you can't do it anywhere."

Manhattan is the central part of New York. When you say Manhattan, many tourists think of big stores, skyscrapers and hotels. They forget about Greenwich Village which is the heart of the city. This is the area of art, latest fashions, old films, books.

Harlem is sometimes called Black Manhattan. It is known for its street life. It is especially famous for its music and jazz clubs. Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, who were two of the greatest jazz musicians, first started to play in Harlem.

The Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom for many, was one of the first sights to welcome immigrants arriving in the United States. The statue stands 93 m (305 ft) tall on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. It was designed by French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and is a gift from France commemorating the first centennial of U.S. independence from Britain.

 

New York City is the most populous city in the United States, as well as a financial, commercial, and cultural center. This photograph shows the borough of Manhattan. The tallest building in view is the Empire State Building.

 

New York

There is no city quite like New York. It is known as "The city That Never Sleeps" and is the biggest commercial and cultural center in the world. Over eight million people live in New York. Manhattan - the heart of the city - is only one of the five boroughs in this great metropolis.

Sightseeing

There are thousand of things to do and places to visit for tourists. The most famous landmark must be The Statue of Liberty - a symbol of freedom. The Empire State Building, built in 1931 has a viewing floor at the top. On a clear day you can take spectacular photographs of the city from here, but it is especially magical at night.

Sports fans can watch the world famous Mets and Yankees play baseball, the Knickerbockers play basketball and Rangers play ice-hockey.

You can relax in Central Park, which is larger than Monaco! New York really does have something for everyone.
