Middle ages
Critics believe that the British history began 5-th century, when Britain was invaded from the continent by the tribes of Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. But at the same time scientists believe that long before that the country had been inhabited by the people called Celts. The invaders started to live in Britain and began to call themselves English. The English language was made from several dialects called Old English. These dialects were used by Anglo- Saxon settlers. The language was also influenced by the language of Vikings. Anglo-Saxon period (5-10- Th). Many Anglo-Saxon poems are probably adaptations of the earlier Vikings poems. Old English literature consists of literature Britain in Old English during in Anglo-Saxon period of England. The works include such genres as epic poems sermons Bible translations and chronics. Epic poems tell of the most important event in people’s history. Among the most famous works of this period is “The song of Beowulf”.
Literature of the Renaissance.
Renaissance Literature refers to the period in European literature that began in Italy during the 14th century and spread around Europe through the 17th century. The impact of the Renaissance varied across the continent; countries that were predominantly Catholic or Protestant experienced the Renaissance differently compared to areas where the Orthodox Church was dominant as reflecting on its culture, as well as those areas of Europe under Islamic rule. The creation of the Printing Press by Johannes Gutenberg encouraged authors to write in the local vernacular rather than in Greek or Latin classical languages, widening the reading audience and promoting the spread of Renaissance ideas.
Literature of the Enlightenment.
The 18th century in Europe was The Age of Enlightenment and literature explored themes of social upheaval, reversals of personal status, political satire, geographical exploration and the comparison between the supposed natural state of man and the supposed civilized state of man.
Literature of the early 19th Century
The years from 1815-1861 are called “The first national period”. The phrase is useful because during this period more first class literary works were written then in any previous period. In American history the Civil War was a border between simpler days and more serious industrial post war period. Most of the prewar writers lived on but after 1865 they had practically nothing new to say.
THE 19TH CENTURY (Early 19th Century).
Different notable people of this period were looking for the prove in different ways that a radical, political, experiment by medical, political literature. For European style writers the center of ideas was situated in Boston. Although this kind of literature didn’t last very long in 1815 “North American reviour”. In New-York which was the center of those who wanted to create a new kind of literature the three important creators of counterrevolution but still cosmopolitan American literature Washington Army, William Cutter Bryan and James Fennimore Cupper. From 1829 Bryan addicted “The New- York evening post”. James Cooper was the first American author to achieve world wide popularity. He wrote “The last of the Mohicans”(1826), “Pathfinder”(1840),”Deer slayer”(1841).
