Domestic Energy – what can be done to reduce inefficient use of energy in our homes

Domestic energy is a the amount of energy that is spent on the various appliances used within housing. The amount of energy used per household varies widely depending on the standard of living of the country, climate, and the age and type of residence.

How energy is used in homes is shaped by many different factors: how homes are heated, how well insulated they are, how draughty they are, what temperature they are heated to, whether air conditioning is used, what and how appliances are used, how homes are lit, how cold it is in winter, and so on.

During the everyday activity people use a lot of gadgets, energy and water recourses. The achievements of mankind help us to make faster the decision of household problems. They are washing machine, hair dryer, coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave, refrigerator, warm water and etc. Nowadays people waste much energy and money in order to economize time and have comfortable conditions with electricity and a lot of gadgets.

This chart below shows how much energy a typical appliance uses per year and its cost in dollars during the year. For example, a refrigerator/freezer uses more than 500 kwh per year and it's cost is about 50$. In comparison, water heater's cost is approximately 200$ and consumes more energy in 3 times than freezer. The most economic appliance is hair dryer, toaster over, coffee maker and so on.

For consumers who are already understand the importance of energy efficient and avoiding wastage can help keep bills down. For energy savings and convenience, consider the following guidelines which is divided on three topics.

ELECTRICITY

· Turn things off when you are not in the room such as lights, TVs, entertainment systems, and your computer and monitor.

· Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use -- TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power.

· Air dryshes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle because dishwasher consumes a lot of energy in different modes of work.

· Turn off the monitor if you aren't going to use your PC for more than 20 minutes.

· Turn off both the CPU and monitor if you're not going to use your PC for more than 2 hours.

Make sure your monitors, printers, and other accessories are on a power strip/surge protector. When this equipment is not in use for extended periods, turn off the switch on the power strip to prevent them from drawing power even when shut off. If you don't use a power strip, unplug extra equipment when it's not in use.

Computer power can be not a consumer of energy but also generator of heating in the house.

Warmer homes through computer power

Without doubts computer servers generate a lot of heat. A small Dutch start-up company Nerdalize, founded in 2013, offered to use them to warm people's homes. The appliance looks like domestic electric radiator. The server is is installed into your main living room, a vent is installed outside for excess heat and then it’s connected to the fibre optic broadband. The heat is circulated around the home and during the summer when it’s not needed it’s vented outside

Our growing population, changing lifestyles and erratic weather patterns have intensified the pressure on our water supply but the good news is we can all play our part in turning the tide with simple changes that can make a big difference.

HOW TO SAVE WATER AND MONEY. Simple practice advises

· Consider switching to a water meter – Households with a water meter tend to use less water per person on average than those homes that pay fixed, unmeasured charges.

· Replace worn washers on leaky taps - A dripping tap in your home wastes over 5,000 litres of water a year – enough to fill a paddling pool every week of the summer.

· Opt for full loads when using your washing machine/dishwasher - Make sure that your dishwasher or washing machine is full before turning it on to save water and energy. Avoid using the half load settings which use much more than half the energy and water of a full load.

· Water your garden early in the morning or evening - Avoid the loss of water through evaporation by watering your garden in the cool of the early morning or evening. This will reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation.

Overall, everybody can save energy following some simple actions like opening windows in spite of using conditioner, bringing in sunlight during daylight hours, cooking outside in warmer spring days. Responsible using of domestic energy is the important issue of many contemporary countries. And the mission of companies that produces alternative energy is to bring it in everyday life.
