Columbus was a famous Italian. In the year 1452, when he was fourteen years old, he went to sea in one of the ships which belonged to an Italian merchant. He visited many different places where he saw some wonderful sights. He was an intelligent boy and he noticed that, as the ship sailed away, the stars changed their places. He began to believe that the world must be round. So, he decided to sail round the world.

At first, no one wanted to give him a ship as they laughed at him. But at last, the king of Spain decided to help him and gave him three small ships.
