4. The protection of children gives the human form of life its best chance to prepare the way of liberty from material bondage. Such protection of children begins from the very day of begetting a child by the purificatory process of garbhadhana-samskara, the beginning of pure life.
5. The protection of the old men gives them a chance to prepare themselves for better life after death.
This complete outlook is based on factors leading to successful humanity as against the civilization of polished cats and dogs. The killing of the above-mentioned innocent creatures is totally forbidden because even by insulting them one loses one's duration of life. In the age of Kali they are not properly protected, and therefore the duration of life of the present generation has shortened considerably. In the Bhagavad-gita it is stated that when the women become unCHASTE for want of proper protection, there are unwanted children called varna-sankara. To insult a CHASTE woman means to bring about disaster in the duration of life. Duhsasana, a brother of Duryodhana, insulted Draupadi, an ideal CHASTE lady, and therefore the miscreants died untimely. These are some of the stringent laws of the Lord mentioned above.

The Kurma Purana states that this shadowy Sita was placed into a fire as a test of CHASTITY. It was Maya-sita who entered the fire and the real Sita who came out of the fire.
(Madhya 1.117 The Later Pastimes of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu)
The word prabhu, or master, indicates that the Lord is to be continuously served by His devotee. The original prabhu is the Lord, Sri Krsna. Nonetheless, there are many devotees attached to Lord Ramacandra, and Murari Gupta is a vivid example of such unalloyed devotion. He never agreed to give up Lord Ramacandra's worship, not even upon Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's request. Such is the CHASTITY of devotional service

"The gopis of Vrndavana have given up the association of their husbands, sons and other family members, who are very difficult to give up, and they have forsaken the path of CHASTITY to take shelter of the lotus feet of Mukunda, Krsna, which one should search for by Vedic knowledge. Oh, let me be fortunate enough to be one of the bushes, creepers or herbs in Vrndavana because the gopis trample them and bless them with the dust of their lotus feet.'
(Antya 7.47 The Meeting of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Vallabha Bhatta)
Regarding Krsna's attractive features being ever fresh, there is a statement by Radharani in the Lalita-madhava in which Krsna is compared to the greatest sculptor, because He is expert in chiseling at the CHASTITY of women. In other words, although CHASTE women may follow the rules and regulations of Vedic principles to become ever faithful to their husbands, Krsna is able to break their stonelike CHASTITY with the chisel of His beauty. Most of the girl friends of Krsna were married, but because Krsna was their friend before their marriages, they could not forget His attractive features, which were always fascinating to them, even after their marriages

The instruction given herein by the Supreme Personality of Godhead to the gopis was not at all sarcastic. Such instructions should be taken very seriously by all honest women. The CHASTITY of women is specifically stressed herein by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore this principle should be followed by any serious woman who wants to be elevated to a higher status of life. Krsna is the center of all affection for all living creatures. When this affection is developed for Krsna, then one surpasses and transcends all Vedic injunctions.
(KB 29 The Rasa Dance: Introduction)
My dear CHASTE and pious wife, I have tested, on the basis of strict CHASTITY, your love for your husband, and you have passed the examination most successfully. I have purposely agitated you by speaking many words which were not applicable to your character, but I am surprised to see that not a pinch of your devotion to Me has been deviated from its fixed position.
(KB 60 Talks Between Krsna and Rukmini)
That sraddha, he has said, sraddha-sabde visvasa kahe sudrdha niscaya. Sraddha means firm faith, visvasa, sudrdha niscaya, unflinching. What is that sudrdha niscaya? Krsne bhakti kaile sarva-karma krta haya. This is the beginning of sraddha. Sraddha means... As in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja. If one is agreeable to this condition, that krsne bhakti kaile, if one agrees, "Yes, if I surrender to Krsna, my all perfection of life is achieved," this is sraddha. Not that "Krsna is also good, and this demigod is also good, you are also good, I am also good. You are also God, I am also God." There is no sraddha. Just like a CHASTE woman cannot say that every man is good. She'll say, "Only my husband is good." That is CHASTITY. If some woman says that "Any man is good..." Similarly, sraddha means to become CHASTE, pure krsna-bhakta. That is sraddha.

If the varna-sankara increases, strisu dustasu varna-sankaro jayate. When women become polluted, no fixed-up husband--that is pollution for woman, no CHASTE, no CHASTITY--then this varna-sankara will come out. And when the world is overpopulated by varna-sankara, it will become a burden. Therefore it so became, atheist, varna-sankara, demons.

Now I have become a Vaisnava, I'll not be violent. I shall tolerate. Caitanya Mahaprabhu has taught us to be tolerant like the tree or the grass. So I shall become tolerant. Let him do." Just like Gandhi used to say. Somebody questioned him that "If somebody comes and violates the CHASTITY of your daughter in your presence, what will you do?" He said, "I shall remain nonviolent." But that is not sastric injunction. This is foolishness. If somebody is aggressor, he must be killed immediately.

"No, you beg the clothes with folded hands, then I shall give you." (laughter) So you have liked this story, (indistinct), but the idea is that "You wanted Me, all of you, as your husband. Now I'm fulfilling your desire. I'm seeing you naked." Because a woman can be naked only before the husband. No one else. This is CHASTITY. A woman cannot be naked anywhere, just like in the club, naked dance. This is most abominable. Woman can be naked only before the husband.

Therefore sankita. This word is used, sankita. Although she is supposed to know everything, still, she was thinking, "May not be my husband." This is the ideal CHASTE, CHASTITY, that even Laksmiji, being doubtful about Visnu, she did not talk, did not approach. Sankita. This is another quality of Laksmiji. She became afraid, "He may not be Narayana." Because she's never experienced of her husband such wonderful feature, half lion and half man.

There are many nice stories... Of course, our time is very short. Still, I wish to narrate one short story, that one man, one boy, was attracted by a beautiful girl. So the girl does not agree, and the boy is persistent. So the... In India, of course, the girls, they keep their CHASTITY very strict. So the girl was not agreeing. So she said, "All right, I agree. After one week you come." She appointed, "Such and such time, you come." So the boy was very glad. And the girl took some purgative throughout the seven days, and she was passing stool, day and night, and vomiting, and she kept all these vomits and stool in a nice pot. So when the appointed time came, the boy came, and the girl was sitting on the door. The boy inquired, "Where is that girl?" She said, "I am that girl." "No, no. You are not. You are so ugly. She was so beautiful. You are not that girl." "No, I am that girl, but I have now separated my beauty in a different pot." "What is that?" She showed: "This is the beauty, this stool and vomit. This is the ingredient." Actually anyone may be very robust or very beautiful--if he passes stool for three or four times, everything changes immediately

.. Therefore I say. Still, she remained dependent on their son. That is is my proposition. Just like the sons, they lost the game and they were to be banished. Kunti was not banished. So when the sons went to forest, Kunti also followed because she thought that " I am widow. I am dependent on my sons. So wherever my sons will remain, I shall remain." She was not... She did not lose the game; neither she was ordered to go to the forest. Similarly, Sita, Sita, wife of Lord Ramacandra. Lord Ramacandra was requested by His father to go to the forest, not Sita. Sita was also a king's daughter. So she could go to her father that "My husband is going to the forest. Let me go to my father's house." She did not go. She preferred that "I shall go with my husband." So when husband said that "You are not banished. You stay at home," she said, "No. I am dependent on You. Wherever You shall go, I must go." This is Vedic culture.
Brahmananda: Her CHASTITY was her great virtue.
Prabhupada: Yes, that is the thing.
Brahmananda: Nowadays that is no longer true.
Prabhupada: Nowadays may be different, but I am speaking of the Vedic ideas, that woman in all circumstances, unless the husband is crazy or something like that, mad, or..., in every case the instance is that wife is faithful and subservient to the husband. That is the Vedic culture. Even the husband goes out of home, vanaprastha, the wife also goes with him. When he takes sannyasa, at that time there is no accompaniment of wife. Otherwise in grhastha life and even vanaprastha life, the wife is constant companion and subservient. That is the history of Vedic culture. History, Gandhari, because her husband was blind, so when the marriage settlement was done, she was not blind, but she voluntarily became blind by wrapping cloth.
Devotee (2): She remained with the cloth wrapped for her whole life?
Prabhupada: Whole life.
Devotee (2): Whole life.
Prabhupada: She voluntarily became blind. And up to the last point of her husband's precarious condition, she remained with him. These are the examples. There are other examples. Damayanti. They became so poor that they had no clothing. So the one cloth divided into two, husband and wife. So these instances are in the Vedic literature, that wife remains always faithful and subservient to the husband. That is their perfection. Now the Americans may not like this idea. That is different thing. But we are speaking of the Vedic culture. And these are the instances, vivid instances. Why Sita accompanied her husband? And because she accompanied her husband in the jungle, the war between Rama Ravana became possible. And it is the advice that "When you go to other countries you should not take your wife." Pathe nari-vinarjitah. Because it may create some trouble. But still, the faithful wife goes with the husband.
Brahmananda: You've used the example of this, that woman is less intelligent of the size of the brain, given by one professor in 1920. So they took offense to this because their idea is that what might have been scientific fact in 1920, in 1975 is not scientific fact.
Prabhupada: Then where is the proof? From 1920 to 1975, where is a woman who is extraordinarily bigger than man?
Brahmananda: Well, they might be able to bring some scientist who would say in 1975 that according to their calculations, there is no difference between the brain of a woman and the brain of a man.
