TECHNOLOGY: ENHANCED VISION SYSTEM (EVS)

In this age of sophisticated automation and robotics engineering is emerging a new concept of all-weather landings currently known as the enhanced vision system (EVS). This technology utilizes a head-up display (HUD) that would allow pilots to land aircraft during near zero visibility conditions with the same precision and confidence as on a clear day or night. Although there are automatic landing system for aircraft being used today, they are very expensive for both the aircraft and the airport owner and therefore are limited in their use.

The EVS concept is based on the assumption that the human operator will always be required in the cockpit for safety and as a mission manager regardless of the advancements in fully automated systems. It also assumes that if the pilot is provided an image of the runway on a HUD, then it will be possible to land the aircraft despite limited visibility. With the real-world correlated image projected on the HUD along with certain flight instrument and navigation information, the pilot can fly an instrument approach with the head and eyes in the same position required to perform a visual approach.

Therefore, the pilot's transition from instruments to the visual phase of the approach is readily accomplished (from: ICAO Journal March 1992).
