ALTITUDE Altitude is vertical distance above some point or level used as a reference. There may be as many kinds of altitude as there are reference levels from which to measure. However, pilots are usually concerned with five types of altitudes: (a) _______________. The altitude of an aircraft above the surface of the terrain. (b) _______________. That altitude read directly from the altimeter (uncorrected) after it is set to the current altimeter setting. (c) _______________. The altitude read from the altimeter when the altimeter setting window is adjusted to 29.92 Hg. (Used for computer solutions for density, altitude, true altitude, true airspeed, etc.) (d) _______________. The true height of the aircraft above sea level - the actual altitude. Airport, terrain, and obstacle elevations found on charts and maps are true altitudes. (e) _______________. This altitude is pressure altitude corrected for non-standard temperature variations. (An important altitude, since it is directly related to the aircraft's take off and climb performance). | density altitude true altitude absolute altitude pressure altitude indicated altitude |
