(1) A/an – неозначений артикль (Remember: a (an) = one = 1)
• a/an + злічуваний іменник в однині (значення: невідомо/неважливо, який саме; будь-який; один з
багатьох подібних; чуємо вперше):
They live in a lovely house. (We don’t know which one.)
I'm reading a good book at the moment. (We don’t know its name or what it’s about.)
I bought a nice sweater yesterday. (We don’t know what it’s like.)
• a/an + назви професій та речей:
A ruler is an instrument for measuring things. I want to train to be a doctor.
• a/an Þ a little, a few, twice a day, a bit, a lot (of): I must drink it once a day.
The – означений артикль
• the + іменник в однині і множині (значення: конкретний; саме цей, виділений з класу багатьох
подібних; чуємо не вперше):
They live in the green house on top of the hill. (Now we know which house and where it is.)
The book I'm reading is about animals. (Now we know which book and what it’s about.)
The sweater I bought is blue. (Now we know whose sweater it is.)
• the + іменник, який позначує щось унікальне, єдине: The President has signed the agreement.
• the + прикметнику найвищому ступені порівняння: She is the most beautiful girl in the world.
• the + порядковий числівник: He was the first to listen to me.
• the + назви океанів, морів, річок, гірських хребтів, готелів, (кіно)театрів, музеїв, газет.
