Criminal detection as a science was unknown before the middle of the XIX century. Earlier ages depended upon two methods: 1) securing a confession by torture of a suspect; 2) catching a man in the act of committing a crime.

One of the most common felonies of the period was butchering another man’s sheep, pig or cow. Even possession of the fresh meat did not constitute proof of guilt in such cases. Only when a man was caught with the dead animal, with blood on his hands, could he be arrested with certainty of conviction.

So the expression ____________________________________ came to be applied to a person in any act of stealth, whether in violation of law or not.

Money laundering aims at legalizing ill-gotten profits. A huge portion of this money is earned through bribery, corruption, fraud, black market activity, tax evasion, arms smuggling, the sale of stolen art objects, and drug trafficking.

It has been established that the annual proceeds from the illicit sale of narcotics worldwide are between $300 billion and $500 billion. This is dirty cash, but it can be laundered and then used to buy whole industries, real estate and political influence.

The most common way of laundering money is to take it to a foreign country clandestinely, and place it in bank accounts there via repeated international transfers, after which it will be impossible to trace its origin. Finally, the “clean” bills are legally invested in the economy. In some cases they set up a company which does not actually generate profit but serves as a facility through which ill-gotten cash can be progressively banked as though it was legitimate cash flow and trading profit.
