1. Previewing the topic. Read the following information. How much do you agree or disagree? Circle the number that gives your opinion. Then discuss it with the class, be ready to back up your answer with arguments and examples.

Read the following text and discuss your answers to the questions with a partner.

Is psychic ability real? Many people, including scientists, have asked this question. In one experiment, scientists told some psychics the longitude and latitude coordinates of a place, and asked the psychics to describe the place. The scientists found that many psychics could describe places in detail when they knew the coordinates, even though they had never been there. Most scientific studies, however, have not shown that psychic ability is real.

But does psychic ability need to be scientifically proven for us to believe that it exists? Human cultures have always had psychics, for example, shamans in Latin America, fortune-tellers in Europe, and witch doctors in Africa. If psychic ability has been found in all times and places, can this mean the ability is real?

How are you? It’s a long time since we have talked, but I have been thinking about you. I need to tell you a little about what is going on in my life right now.
