Classroom activity

Commenting on People, Events,

And Scene in Narration

A narration tells a story. When writers use narration for all or part of an essay, they sometimes comment on the events, scene, or people in the narration in order to point out their significance or in order to help the reader better understand points. Rodriguez does this at times in "Reading for Success." For example, in paragraph 3, Rodriguez explains that reading made him feel isolated; he does this so the reader understands the significance of his early reading. In paragraphs 4 and 9, he describes his surroundings to help the reader visualize what he experienced and thereby understand it better. In paragraph 8, he explains why he read so passionately so the reader understands his motivation. When you use narration for all or part of an essay, you, too, can comment on people or events to communicate important information to your reader.
