Tree Destroys House

Yesterday afternoon a 35 - year-old housewife narrowly escaped death when a tree blew over and fell onto her house, completely destroying it. “It was quite windy. I heard a strange noise coming from our tree. Suddenly the wind blew a little stronger, and I watched it crash onto the roof.” The Bowles fam­ily are staying with friends while their house is rebuilt.

Man Gets Shock

A man received a severe electric shock at his home in Solihull, Birmingham. Mr. Ian Taylor, 42, spent the night at the Birmingham Royal Hospital and then went home. “Suddenly there was a flash and an explosion. I don’t know how it happened.”

Post Office Robbery

Yesterday afternoon thieves stole $ 500 from a post office in Preston, Lanca­shire. Police do not have a good description of the two men, but they know that they escaped in a red Ford Cortina. This information came from an 11 -year-old boy, Charlie Carrack.

PAST INDEFINITE - PAST CONTINUOUS

Ex.1. Put the verbs into the correct form.

Ex.2. Put the words while, during, or for into each gap.

Note: While is a conjunction, and is followed by a clause (subject + verb).

e.g. I met Pete while I was studying at university.

During is a preposition, and is followed by a noun.

e.g. I worked on a farm during the holidays.

The noun after during usually expresses an activity that takes time.

e.g. during the lesson/film/football match/afternoon

While and during answer the question When?

For answers the question How long? It is followed by a time expression.

e.g. I lived there for three years.

THE FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE

The Future Continuous is formed by means of the Future Indefinite of the auxiliary verb to be and Participle I of the notional verb.

In the interrogative form the first auxiliary verb is placed before the sub­ject. In the negative form particle not is placed after the first auxiliary verb.

e.g. He will be reading.

Will he be reading?

He will not be reading.

1. The Future Continuous is used to denote an action which will be going on at a definite moment in the future. The definite moment is indicated either by another future action expressed by a verb in the Present Indefinite or by an adverbial phrase.

e.g. I’ll be working when you return.

At 12 o’clock I’ll still be working.

The definite moment is often not expressed, but is understood from the situa­tion.

e.g. I’m sure you won’t be able to speak to him, he’ll be working.

2. The Future Continuous is used to express an action which is sure to take

place in the future in the normal, natural course of events.

e.g. But my dear Ann, you’ll be getting into debt.

I feel I’ll be asking you the same question tomorrow.

Ex.1. Make up a sentence using the Future Continuous.

Don’t go out into the street in an hour. (pour) - It will be pouring.
