1066 – Death of King Edward the Confessor. William of Normandy invades and defeats Harold at Hastings; is crowned as king.

1086 – Feudal registration in England (The Domesday Book).

1170 – Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, is assassinated.

1215 – The barons force King John to sign and accept the Magna Carta Libertata (the Great Charter).

1265 - Simon de Monfort summons a parliament of churchmen, barons, knights and two representatives from each borough.

1283 – Edward I proclaims the annexation of Wales to England.

1332 – first recorded division of parliament into separate House of Lords and Commons.

1337 – The beginning of the Hundred Years’ War with France (1337-1453), during which England lost all her French possessions, except Calais.

1348 – The Black Death in England.

1362 – English replaces Norman French as language of parliament and the law court.

1381 – the Great Peasants’ Revolt of Wat Tyler.

1429 – The French, led by Joan of Arc, defeat the English at battle of Patay and raise the siege of Orleans.

1431 -Joan of Arc is burned by the English as a witch.

1455-1485 Wars of the Roses of the House of York (White Rose) against the House of Lancaster (Red Rose).

1474 – William Caxton produces the first printed book in England.

1497 – John cabot makes voyage to North America.

1516 – Sir Thomas More publishes Utopia.

1521 – Henry VIII receives papal title of Defender of the Faith.

1534 – the Act of Supremacy severs the Anglican church from papal control. Henry VIII becomes Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

1547 – Death of Henry VIII; accession of Edward I.

1549 – The Great Norfolk Rising aimed against land enclosures.

1553 -Death of Edward I. Lady Jane Grey is proclaimed as queen but Mary Tudor accedes to the throne.

1679 – Habeas Corpus Act passed.

1689 – William and mary are declared joint sovereigns; Bill of Rights is declared.

1701 – Act of Settlement bars Catholics from the throne of England.

1707 - Act of Union with Scotland creates United Kingdom with a single parliament.

1943 – American forces arrive in England.

1944 – D-Day (6 June).

1947 – Independence is granted to India.

1948 – the NHS is established.

1951 – Conservatives win general election. Churchill again becomes PM.

1952 – Death of George VI; accession of Elizabeth II.

1953 – Coronation of Elizabeth II

1955 -Churchill resigns.

1956 – Britain participates in the Suez aggression against Egypt.

1958 – First women peers take their seats in the House of Lords. CND is founded; the first march to Aldermaston.

1966 – Gas fields are discovered under the North Sea.
